SEN Teaching Assistant

Are you compassionate, patient, and dedicated to helping children with complex needs thrive? Teaching Personnel are delighted to be recruiting for a Teaching Assistant to join a highly supportive and nurturing SEN Secondary School, working with pupils who have Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), and Autism.

This is a deeply rewarding role where you will play a vital part in supporting pupils’ communication, independence, emotional well‑being, and overall access to learning. Each day will bring variety, purpose, and the chance to make a lasting positive impact on children with high‑level needs.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Support pupils with SLD and PMLD through sensory‑based learning, repetition, and multi‑sensory activities tailored to individual EHCPs.
  • Assist pupils with autism by using visual aids, structured routines, and communication tools such as PECS or symbols to reduce anxiety and build engagement.
  • Provide personal care where required, including feeding, toileting, hoisting, and mobility support, always ensuring dignity and comfort.
  • Use assistive technologies and specialist equipment (e.g., switches, sensory tools, hoists) to promote independence and access to learning.
  • Create a calm, nurturing environment by supporting emotional regulation, modelling positive behaviour, and using de‑escalation techniques when needed.
Requirements

To be successful, you should have:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEND, complex needs, care, or SLD/PMLD/Autism (school, residential, or care settings welcome).
  • A kind, patient, and resilient approach, with the ability to build trusting relationships.
  • Confidence supporting pupils with personal care and mobility needs.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A willingness to learn and adapt to a variety of specialist teaching approaches.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
