Equitas are seeking a reliable and proactive School Caretaker to join a secondary school in Reading. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the school site is safe, secure, and well maintained, providing a welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
This is a hands-on role requiring flexibility, initiative, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Carry out day-to-day maintenance, basic repairs, and minor DIY tasks across the school site.
Ensure the premises, grounds, and facilities are clean, safe, and secure at all times.
Open and close the school buildings (including alarms, gates, and locking systems).
Monitor and maintain heating, lighting, and water systems to ensure they operate effectively.
Support with setting up rooms, furniture, and equipment for school events, meetings, or exams.
Ensure health & safety standards are met in line with school and statutory requirements.
Act as the first point of contact for contractors and oversee their work on site when required.
Maintain records relating to maintenance, security, health & safety checks, and compliance.
Undertake regular inspections of the premises and grounds to identify and resolve issues.
Respond promptly to emergencies, including fire alarms, security incidents, or urgent repairs.
Essential:
Previous experience in a caretaker, School caretaker, site manager, or facilities role (ideally within a school or similar environment).
Practical skills in basic repairs, DIY, plumbing, and general maintenance.
Good understanding of health & safety regulations.
Ability to work independently and use initiative.
Strong organisational skills and reliability.
Desirable:
Experience working in a school or educational setting desirable but not essentail
