Job description
Responsibilities
  • Provide anaesthetic services for elective and emergency care according to rota allocation.
  • Support training and educational activities within the Trust.
  • Support audit, research and service development projects under the guidance of the departmental QI lead.
  • Maintain continuous professional learning and development.
Clinical Duties
  • Assess patients before surgery, agree an anaesthetic plan and deliver safe anaesthesia with appropriate supervision; provide high‑quality post‑operative analgesia and a comprehensive handover to Recovery staff; follow up post‑operatively as clinically required.
  • Provide out of hours cover in CEPOD theatre or Labour Ward, working with the on‑call team to optimise efficiency and patient safety.
  • Ensure safe and effective prescribing following the Trust prescribing guidelines.
  • Deliver training and education to all levels of staff, as directed by senior clinical staff.
Learning & Development
  • Keep current with medical practice in anaesthesia, participate in annual appraisal and maintain a continuous professional learning plan through the SAS doctor development programme; FRCA examination attempts will be encouraged and supported.
  • Contribute to audit, research and quality improvement projects and participate in the supervision, teaching and assessment of medical students and junior colleagues as needed.
General Responsibilities
  • Comply with all Trust policies and procedures, especially around clinical, health and safety; complete all mandatory training and HR processes.
  • Raise concerns regarding any Trust activity with appropriate staff and promote Trust values and ways of working.
  • Be a cooperative and supportive member of the anaesthetic team, raising issues with the Clinical Lead as needed.
  • Provide additional support to health professional students on placement at the Trust.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Maintain training and knowledge about safeguarding issues for vulnerable adults and support other staff in managing these issues.
  • Complete mandatory training requirements, including the Mental Capacity Act and Protection of Liberty Safeguards legislation.
  • Ensure all clinical activity is evidence based, safe and within the clinician’s competence.
  • Keep contemporaneous clinical records and communications to ensure effective coordination and continuity of care.
  • Understand and comply with Trust governance processes to safeguard patient and colleague safety.
  • Comply with GMC guidance and Good Medical Practice principles; alert the Medical Director if there are concerns about registration.
  • Maintain sufficient medical indemnity for practice within the Trust.
  • Participate in annual appraisal and meet revalidation and licensing requirements.
  • Maintain individual and team professional resilience through self‑awareness and self‑care.

Candidate Profile
• At least two years of anaesthetic experience, ideally in the NHS, with obstetric anaesthetic competencies.
• Capable of covering the labour ward out of hours without direct supervision.
• Willing to undertake ST4 training posts or pursue an anaesthetic career outside the traditional route.
