We are looking for a Research Midwife to support and deliver clinical research. The individual should be highly motivated, enthusiastic and capable of contributing to the development of research within our midwifery research team.

If you are committed to providing high-quality care to patients and helping them to make the right decisions about their treatment options, with the skills to guide and advise them throughout their research journey, this role could be for you.

You will be instrumental in implementing study objectives and will provide dedicated support to ensure that the study is delivered to time and target.

You will be educated to degree level; you will have post-registration experience of working in a clinical environment.

Main duties of the job

As a Research Midwife you will be responsible for the recruitment, education, monitoring and follow up of clinical trial patients and the collection and documentation of accurate data. You will also be responsible for all aspects of trial co-ordination from feasibility to close out.

Post holder will contribute to the development of evidence-based practice and the body of professional knowledge.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will be a registered midwife and will work as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary O&G research team which has been established for more than 10 years. The post holder will maintain the clinical competences required of a clinical midwife.

The post holder will support the development and delivery of clinical research in O&G across the Trust.

Will initiate and manage midwifery activities related to a wide portfolio of clinical research trials, from initiation to close out in accordance with ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Trust Standard Operating procedures (SOPs).

Work patterns will mainly involve supporting research delivery at Sunderland Royal Hospital, with flexibility in covering O&G research at South Tyneside District General Hospital when required. The post holder will supervise junior members of the team.

Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to organise programmes of several clinical trials at any one time.
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and co-ordinate own workload and that of others.
  • Ability to work autonomously using own initiative and as a member of a small team as well as part of the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Verbal; to communicate appropriately with clinical colleagues and patients.
  • Ability to explain complex clinical trial information.
  • Written; ability to produce written reports.
  • Interpersonal; ability to engage with trial subjects and maintain relationship of trust and confidence.
  • Ability to work across boundaries, integrating with multidisciplinary staff in relation to research trials.
  • Computer literate with experience of Microsoft Office packages including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Evidence of attention to detail and accuracy in data collection.
  • Ability to develop word processing, report writing and presentation.

Other
  • The job holder may be required to travel to/work at various sites, therefore must meet the travel requirements of the post.
  • Work patterns can involve supporting research delivery across units in the South Tyneside and Sunderland Health Care Group and other partner organisations in the NENC Clinical Research Network.
Qualifications
  • First level registered midwife with experience.
  • Evidence of specialist knowledge and skills in research through practical experience and/or theoretical study.
  • Knowledge of ICH GCP and Informed Consent.
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships.
  • Basic IT Skills.
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development at PGD level.
  • Knowledge of recent NHS legislation.
  • Understanding of consent processes for research.
  • Awareness of changing trends within health care.
  • Attended GCP training.
  • Awareness of current legislation regarding research governance issues.
  • Knowledge of research ethics/R&D approval processes.
