Job description

Salford Business School is seeking a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our interdisciplinary research team working at the forefront of sustainable energy systems. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-impact project focused on flexibility modelling and grid impact optimisation, supporting the transition to sustainable cities and societies.

You will be part of a vibrant, international research environment that values innovation, collaboration, and real-world impact. Working under the leadership of Professor Vahid Vahidinasab, Chair in Sustainability, you will play a key role in shaping the research agenda of the Salford Centre for Research on Self-sustaining Systems and Societies. The role offers the chance to engage with academic, industry, and community partners, and to contribute to the development of solutions that address pressing societal and technological challenges.

The role

As Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will lead the development of an optimisation-based simulator to assess how grid-edge devices contribute to power grid flexibility. You will use advanced modelling and simulation tools such as PandaPower and OpenDSS to evaluate the impact of distributed energy resources on grid performance.

Your responsibilities will include conducting simulations, analysing data, and supporting the pilot implementation of the project. You will also contribute to the wider impact of the research through publications, presentations, and engagement with stakeholders. The role involves site visits, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the opportunity to shape the direction of a strategically important research area.

We hope you will bring

We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, or a closely related field, and a strong track record of high-quality research. You should have experience in distribution grid modelling and simulation, impact evaluation studies, and working with external research commissioners.

You will need excellent programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB), and a solid understanding of grid codes, standards, and flexibility modelling. Strong communication skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and a commitment to interdisciplinary research are essential.

We value individuals who can write clearly for both academic and non-academic audiences, manage projects effectively, and build partnerships across sectors. A willingness to travel internationally and engage with diverse communities is also important.

If you are passionate about sustainability, innovation, and making a real-world impact through research, we would love to hear from you.

What’s in it for you
  • Competitive Salary and excellent pension scheme.
  • An impressive 32 days leave, plus bank holidays, additional time off at winter break, and the opportunity to buy even more!
  • Flexible Working – we support a culture of flexible and agile working, to help you find the right balance.

Interviews will be held on 12th, 15th and 16th December 2025
