Regional Community Engagement & Inclusion Manager

The NIHR (National Institute of Health and Care Research) North East and North Cumbria Regional Research Delivery Network is looking for someone who is passionate about connecting people, ideas and communities to make health and care research more visible, accessible and inclusive. This role offers the chance to work across a diverse region, shaping how research is understood and experienced by the public, and supporting community organisations to embed strong, confident approaches to research engagement and inclusion.

You will work with health and care leaders, community partners and public contributors to help ensure research reflects real needs and lived experiences. This means building trusted relationships, spotting opportunities to do things differently and helping colleagues navigate new ways of working. You'll bring curiosity, empathy and confidence when working with a wide range of groups, and you will enjoy the challenge of influencing across different settings.

This role is a part time position (0.6 WTE, 22.5 hrs per week). We offer a hybrid, flexible working policy and welcome applications from diverse communities.

Main duties of the job

Lead regional activity to strengthen public engagement and Research Inclusion, working with partners across health, care and community settings. Build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders, supporting inclusive approaches and increasing participation from under‑served groups. Coordinate regional initiatives, facilitate meetings and workshops, and contribute to national programmes such as Be Part of Research and Join Dementia Research. Collect, analyse and report qualitative and quantitative data to demonstrate impact and inform continuous improvement. Provide strategic advice on engagement and inclusion, support public partners, and help embed consistent, high‑quality practices across the region. Use excellent communication, problem‑solving and influencing skills to navigate complex issues, manage sensitive conversations and promote collaboration. Champion the voice of communities to ensure health and care research reflects local needs.

The Regional Community Engagement & Inclusion Manager will be responsible for managing public engagement and Research Inclusion operational activities, including public‑focused stakeholder engagement, community engagement, digital engagement and under‑served communities projects across a NHSE region, acting as a strategic link between NHSE regional activities and the RDN, to involve delivery of RDN strategic aims for public engagement, participation and Research Inclusion at the regional level and support of NHSE‑led initiatives. The post holder will be expected to influence and lead on data collection, analysis and reporting of specified evaluation and impact measures at the regional and national level and meaningful integration of the public voice across all RDN and RRDN services.

Education and Qualifications
  • Post graduate diploma or equivalent specialist experience in disciplines relevant to post
  • Project management qualification or demonstrable experience of managing projects at the regional level
Knowledge and Experience
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of implementing the UK Standards for Public Involvement in projects and programmes and familiarisation with key principles and the value of public involvement and engagement within health and social care
  • In‑depth understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and challenges related to equality, diversity and inclusion across the health and care research landscape
  • Experience of managing and delivering patient and public‑led engagement opportunities at a local and national level (including local events, online workshops and consultations)
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to coordinate, collect and analyse a range of qualitative and quantitative data, identifying areas of concern, production of reports and solution‑based recommendations
  • A proven ability to build, maintain and develop effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders across health and social care settings, community‑based organisations and VSCOs, including subject matter experts
