Job summary

Project Manager

Grade: Staff Grade 5 • Post Type: Permanent • Role Type: Programme and Project Management • Working Pattern: Full Time • Salary: £43,198 (minimum) • Closing Date: 04/01/2026

Locations: East Midlands, East of England, South East – Peterborough, Reading, Welwyn Garden City. Multiple sites: DEFRA GRP EA ALCHEMY, AL7 1HE; DEFRA GRP EA FOBNEY MEAD OFFICE, RG2 0HP; DEFRA GRP QUAY HOUSE, PE2 8YY.

Responsibilities

Lead and deliver projects such as flood risk management studies and schemes. Manage the entire project delivery process from strategic planning, feasibility, detailed design, to implementation, construction and handover. Support and build high‑performing teams including suppliers, client representatives, technical specialists and partners. Apply commercial acumen in contract and risk management, establishing effective stakeholder relationships, and making project decisions in line with governance, assurance, and legislation. Negotiate agreements, consents, approvals, and external funding with statutory authorities, landowners and local communities. Provide incident response and business continuity support as required, with additional payment available.

Experience and Skills
  • Relevant degree in civil engineering, environmental science, geography or similar.
  • At least four years of project management experience, preferably on civil engineering projects.
  • Project management qualification such as PRINCE2 or APM.
  • Experience in financial and commercial controls, NEC contract suites, CDM regulations and risk management.
  • Strong negotiation, innovative thinking, and ability to deliver on time, quality and budget.
