Prisoner Trainer/Mentor
HMP Wealstun, Leeds

Full-time (37 hours), Permanent

The Role

We are looking for a Trainer who will support participants in custody as part of the Creating Future Opportunities (CFO) Evolution Programme. In this role, you will deliver a structured six-week course to small groups, as well as provide tailored one-to-one support. Working closely with prison staff, facilitators, and peer mentors, you’ll play a key part in preparing individuals for release, supporting rehabilitation, and reducing reoffending.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver engaging group sessions on topics including goal setting, social interaction, coping with change, and healthy relationships.
  • Complete initial assessments, enrol participants, and create tailored action plans.
  • Provide one-to-one guidance to review goals and offer ongoing support.
  • Build positive, non-judgemental relationships to foster a safe and supportive environment.
  • Manage a caseload, balancing group delivery with individual support and administration.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records using internal IT systems.
  • Monitor progress and set clear objectives to support rehabilitation.
  • Follow Health & Safety policies and safeguarding procedures at all times.
About You
  • Experience delivering structured sessions in group settings, with the ability to adapt to different needs.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust and motivate participants.
  • Understanding of safeguarding principles (training provided).
  • Confident using IT systems to manage participant data.
  • Experience supporting offenders or marginalised groups within justice, training, or counselling settings.
  • Able to work towards targets and performance expectations.
  • Awareness of the barriers faced by individuals in custody and the challenges of rehabilitation.
  • Familiarity with prison environments and safeguarding considerations.
