Role : Principal Safety Case Enginer (staff)

Hybrid : 3 days per week

Location : Warrington, Bristol, Newbury, Leicester

Description : Our Client ensures security of energy supply and helps protect populations across the world by providing specialist project development, engineering and safety solutions across the nuclear lifecycle.

We here at Simpson Booth can help. Our client is keen to review applications from experienced high-hazard safety case personnel eager to transition into the nuclear sector for their mission-critical, high-stakes projects.

The Role

As a Principal Safety Case Engineer, your day-to-day responsibilities will cover all aspects of the business, from business winning to subsequent project delivery. You will be a key member with responsibility for developing the team, both internally and within the customer organisations.

You will use your expertise and knowledge to help develop the next generation of Safety Consultants throughout the Client's business portfolio.

Project Delivery
  • Providing the nuclear safety input to design projects, ensuring that nuclear safety requirements are incorporated;
  • Preparing and agreeing the Safety Case Strategy;
  • Managing delivery for the work undertaken within their agreed remit against cost and programme to the satisfaction of the Key Stakeholders i.e. Safety Case Managers, Safety Case Owners, Client Team, Safety Committee, INSA / Peer Review, NSC, Regulators;
  • Producing, verifying and approving calculations, analyses, design basis documentation and technical reports;
  • Acting as the Point of Contact for the Key Stakeholders, ensuring adequate communication between the Engineering Delivery Team, Construction Experts, Operators, Safety Assessors, Site Safety Case Managers and other Stakeholders;
  • Leading and participating in Hazard Identification studies;
  • Co-ordinating production of the safety submission including all specialist safety input;
  • Supporting submissions through the various review and approval stages;
  • Review and approval of design changes, concessions and technical queries;
  • Managing project risks by closing out safety items on the Technical Issues and Risk Register Database;
  • Raising quality plans for single discipline work packages;
  • Producing, verifying, and approving technical Scopes of Work, assessing tender returns, then verifying / assessing and / or approving the outputs to ensure that the requirements of the design sub-contract is met;
  • Feeding back lessons learnt for use on future stages of the current project and other projects.
Bid Support
  • Providing safety case input to bids;
  • Peer reviewing bids and designs;
  • Producing estimates for bids;
  • Independent assessment of the technical basis of claims and disputes.
Growth
  • Building and maintaining customer relationships;
  • Growing the business through the identification and development of opportunities;
  • Representing the discipline to customers, regulatory and external bodies.
Functional
  • Maintaining awareness of wider industry process and project developments;
  • Reviewing industry best practice for implementation;
  • Undertaking any special duties as may be specified from time to time by the Functional Leader;
  • Ensuring that deployed resources are suitably qualified and experienced personnel;
  • Directing and supervising the work of technical specialists within the same discipline.

As a key member of the Hazard Management Team, you will have :

Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor Honours Degree (minimum) in relevant Science or Engineering related discipline;
  • Demonstrable knowledge with cross-industry experience and in-depth knowledge of a wide range of nuclear facilities, their operations and site license compliance arrangements;
  • Demonstrable experience in managing teams to deliver large, technically complex, fit for purpose safety cases;
  • Demonstrable experience in the mentoring, training, and development of more junior staff;
  • Demonstrable problem solving, leadership and communication skills;
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : Hazard Management Strategy;
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : Radiological Safety Assessments;
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : DBAA;
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : Consequence Assessment;
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : Derivation of SFRs;
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : HAZOP Chair and production of HAZOP Reports;
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : Safety Reports (PSRs, PCSRs etc. and equivalents);
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : ALARP Justification;
  • Demonstrable experience of directing and producing Safety Case documentation, for example : INSA / Peer Review;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of specialist safety case disciplines, such as criticality assessment, shielding and dose assessment, environmental assessment, human factors;
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of ONR Safety Assessment Principles and relevant legislation such as, the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2019, the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016, Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018, and IAEA SSR-6 and associated transport legislation.
