Teaching Assistant – SEND (Autism Experience)

Location: Bishop Auckland
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Full-time
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm

We are delighted to be working with a friendly and inclusive primary school in Bishop Auckland who are seeking a committed and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join their team on a full-time basis from January.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Teaching Assistant with experience supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), particularly Autism, who is passionate about helping children achieve their full potential in a nurturing and structured learning environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEND, particularly those with Autism
  • Support pupils’ academic, social and emotional development
  • Assist the class teacher with engaging lessons and activities
  • Adapt learning materials and approaches to meet individual needs
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation using consistent strategies
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, teaching assistants and senior leaders
  • Collaborate with therapists and external professionals where appropriate
Qualifications
  • Have previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant or in a similar support role
  • Have experience supporting pupils with SEND – essential
  • Autism experience is essential
  • Knowledge of additional needs such as ADHD – desirable
  • Demonstrate patience, empathy and a calm, nurturing approach
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team and independently when required
  • Have strong communication skills
