Aphasia Support is a passionate, community centred charity. Our mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with Aphasia and their carers by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long term support. We want to create a world where every person with Aphasia has access to support and can communicate with confidence.

Aphasia Support is looking to recruit a Session Leader to oversee a brand new twice monthly meeting Aphasia Cafe in Preston. The Aphasia Cafe meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 10.30 to 12. You must have ongoing availability during this timeframe.

Overview

We are seeking a qualified speech and language therapist (NHS band 5 to 7), a student studying to become a speech and language therapist at undergraduate or postgraduate level, or an experienced SLT Assistant or Support Worker (NHS band 4 or above) to lead the Aphasia Cafe in Preston.

Main duties of the job
  • Leading the Aphasia Cafe in Preston twice a month.
  • Working alongside the Aphasia Cafe group and volunteer support group to design and deliver engaging Aphasia Cafe sessions which consider the varying language abilities of attendees.
  • Providing guidance and support to volunteers within the groups.
  • Ensure attendance registers are updated after each session and write a short report providing an overview of the session.
  • Liaising with the Aphasia Support staff team on fundraising and awareness raising events which involve the Aphasia Cafe groups.
  • Attend briefings from the charity held twice a year on Zoom.
  • Successful candidates will be supported by the charity's CEO during their induction period and a thorough handover of responsibilities will be provided.

Aphasia Support currently has a staff team of 6 people. We rely on sessional worker speech and language therapists to oversee the 1to1 support we provide and our aphasia cafes. We also have an army of amazing volunteers. We are a close knit charity who are striving to make a meaningful difference to the people we support. Come join us!

Person Specification
Experience

  • An experienced SLT Assistant or Support Worker working at NHS band 4 or above.

Salary: Qualified £30 per hour; Unqualified £20 per hour
