A leading healthcare organization is seeking a Pre-registration Pharmacy Technician in Cardiff for a fixed-term training post. This 24-month role provides the required experience to register as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Candidates should have a minimum of 4 GCSEs, including English and Maths, and an NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy Services. The position offers a salary of £26,928 to £29,551 annually and the opportunity to work in a dynamic healthcare team.

Job description
Pre-registration Pharmacy Technician (Training post)

The closing date is 23 December 2025

This post is a fixed term training contract of 24 months. The training post provides the opportunity to gain the required experience and qualification(s) needed to register as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Salary: Initially Annex 21 Band 4 - 70%, progressing to 75% after 12 months. This is then increased to National Living Wage as per NHS contract.

Pharmacy technicians develop a high level of expertise in relation to medicines and health and they work as part of healthcare teams in hospitals, manufacturing units, community pharmacies and GP practices. They focus on management and use of medicines to make sure all types of people get the best outcomes from their medicines. They lead teams delivering medicines service.

During the two-year training you will be expected to gain experience reflecting the changing and growing roles of the Pharmacy Technician.

Successful completion of the programme enables you to apply to the General Pharmaceutical Council for registration as a pharmacy technician and to apply for jobs as a pharmacy technician.

This training post is a Welsh Government Modern Apprenticeship delivered via HEIW.

Fixed term until 14/09/27 due to being a training post.

We are looking for forward‑thinking, enthusiastic, organised and motivated individuals to join our dynamic and motivated Pharmacy team at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

The role of the Pharmacy technician is varied and interesting and continuously developing new roles, which is why we are offering this opportunity to explore this innovative role in a rotational training programme. You will gain experience in a hospital setting dispensing for In‑patients and Out‑patients, Purchasing and Distribution and ward‑based work.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 4 GCSEs grade A*- C (new grades 9 - 4) or equivalent including: GCSE English at Grade C/Level 4 or above, Scottish National 5 or above, or equivalent English language evidence which can include Essential Skills Wales Communication Level. GCSE Maths at Grade C/Level 4, Scottish National 5 or above, or equivalent evidence of numeracy which can include Essential Skills Wales Application of Number Level 2. One GCSE Science at Grade C/Level 4 or above, or Scottish National 5 or equivalent. Evidence of these will be requested at interview.
