Are you ready to shape the future of infrastructure?

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Pre-Construction Engineer to join our Environment Business at Galliford Try.

Based in or near Mansfield, you’ll work across multiple projects in the region, playing a key role in the successful planning and delivery of civil and MEICA works. This is your chance to be part of a forward-thinking team delivering critical environmental infrastructure with lasting impact.

What you will be doing:

As a Pre-Construction Engineer, you will support the development and coordination of early-stage project planning, working collaboratively across technical, commercial, and delivery teams. Your focus will be on ensuring projects are well-positioned for successful delivery — on time, on budget, and to the highest standards.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the interface between design, procurement, commercial, and delivery functions during pre-construction.
  • Coordinating with internal teams, designers, clients, and supply chain to ensure efficient delivery strategies for both civil and MEICA elements.
  • Providing critical input during the pre-contract phase, including constructability reviews, programme development, and early-stage delivery planning.
  • Supporting the seamless handover from pre-construction to delivery teams.
  • Managing design and procurement stages to ensure client approvals and internal validation are achieved, while identifying opportunities for programme or cost efficiencies.
  • Overseeing the quality and timeliness of engineering deliverables, setting clear expectations and stretch targets.
  • Organising advanced site investigations such as surveys, trial holes, and inspections to inform design and delivery.
  • Operating proactive change control processes to respond quickly to risks and changes.
  • Working with procurement to maximise value from supply chain engagement and buying strategies.
  • Supporting the development of robust delivery plans and buildability reviews, including temporary works considerations.
  • Acting as a technical interface with clients and supply chain partners.
  • Ensuring all functional teams (H&S, Quality, Environmental, etc.) are engaged throughout design.
  • Collaborating with commissioning and asset integration teams early to plan successful project outcomes.
  • Reporting on technical and delivery performance to the risk manager.
  • Championing safety, quality, and environmental standards in everything you do.
  • Sharing best practice and contributing to continuous improvement across projects.
About you:

You’re an enthusiastic, proactive professional who enjoys working in a collaborative environment and is passionate about high-quality project delivery. You bring strong technical know-how, solid commercial understanding, and a desire to make a positive impact on the environment.

Essential skills & experience:
  • HND / HNC in a relevant engineering discipline (BEng / MEng preferred).
  • Proven background in construction or engineering, ideally in water/wastewater or similar infrastructure sectors.
  • Strong understanding of civil and MEICA design and delivery planning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid commercial and contractual awareness.
  • Ability to manage supply chain engagement and project timelines effectively.
  • Confident decision-maker with a practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • Skilled in negotiation and managing stakeholders.
  • Proficient with IT systems and relevant software tools.
  • IOSH Working Safely (or equivalent).
  • Professional qualification (preferred but not essential).
  • A positive, can-do mindset and proactive attitude.
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills.
  • Flexibility and resilience to work across multiple projects.
  • A collaborative nature with a passion for excellent customer service.
