Practice Nurse - New to General Practice

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate newly qualified nurse to join our friendly primary care team as a Nurse, working 26 hours per week. This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse at the start of their career who is keen to develop skills in general practice and community based care. You will be supported by experienced GPs, practice nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team, with a strong focus on supervision, learning and professional development.

We are a forward thinking training practice based in Belper. We look after over 12,000 patients and offer a full range of primary care services, based in a modern surgery. Our dynamic team compromises of three nurses, three ANPs and three HCAs.

You will provide the full range of nursing tasks (subject to training) in what is always a varied and interesting job. You will be flexible and willing to adapt in the fast moving health service. You will be a conscious learner, keen to learn new skills. You will be a good team player, supportive of your colleagues (who will be supportive of you).

Main duties of the job

To deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing care within a general practice setting, under appropriate supervision and in alignment with professional codes of conduct. The role supports the development of a newly qualified nurse into a confident, autonomous practice nurse through structured induction, supervision, and ongoing training. Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Care

  • Provide high-quality, holistic nursing care to patients across the lifespan.
  • Assist in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of patient care under supervision.
  • Perform basic nursing tasks such as wound care, ECGs, blood pressure monitoring, urinalysis, height/weight measurements, and other routine procedures.
  • Undertake venepuncture (if trained) or complete training promptly upon appointment.
  • Administer vaccinations and injections in line with training and local policy (or undertake training as part of induction).
  • Support management of long‑term conditions such as asthma, diabetes, COPD, and hypertension under guidance.
  • Provide health promotion advice (e.g., smoking cessation, weight management, contraception awareness).
  • Contribute to the management of safeguarding concerns and follow safeguarding policies.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols at all times.
  • Build positive therapeutic relationships with patients and carers, ensuring care is patient‑centred, respectful, and culturally sensitive.
  • Support patients to understand and follow their care plans.
  • Provide clear, evidence‑based health information and education in a way patients can understand.
  • Participate in care navigation where appropriate, signposting patients to services.

3. Administrative and Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive clinical records using the practice's electronic patient record system (e.g., EMIS or SystmOne).
  • Participate in clinical audits, data collection, and quality improvement initiatives, including QOF‑related work.
  • Manage workload efficiently, including responding to tasks, messages and results within competence.
  • Follow all practice policies, protocols and statutory guidance, including confidentiality and GDPR.
  • Attend practice meetings, training sessions, and multidisciplinary team discussions.

4. Professional Development

  • Engage in a structured induction programme and commit to ongoing development into a fully autonomous practice nurse role.
  • Maintain NMC registration, revalidation portfolio and evidence of CPD.
  • Participate in regular supervision and reflective practice activities.
  • Undertake additional courses relevant to general practice nursing, such as:
  • Immunisation training
  • Cervical cytology (once experienced)
  • Chronic disease management courses
  • Minor illness/wound management training

5. Teamwork

  • Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, HCAs, pharmacists, social prescribers, and administrative staff.
  • Communicate effectively within the team, sharing concerns or clinical issues promptly.
  • Support colleagues during busy periods and contribute to a positive working environment.

Health & Safety

  • Comply with all practice health and safety procedures.
  • Report incidents, near misses and hazards in line with practice policy.
  • Ensure equipment used for clinical tasks is safe and maintained.

Confidentiality

  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in line with NMC Code, GDPR and practice policies.
  • Be aware of responsibilities related to safeguarding, information governance, and consent.
Person Specification
Experience
  • Demonstrated clinical competence developed during nursing placements, including assessment, planning, and delivery of care.
  • Experience working with diverse patient groups.
  • Experience maintaining accurate, timely clinical documentation.
  • Placement or work experience in general practice, community nursing, or ambulatory care.
  • Experience using electronic patient record systems (e.g., EMIS, SystmOne).
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (Adult) with the NMC (or awaiting PIN following qualification).
  • Evidence of recent nursing degree completion.
  • Up‑to‑date Basic Life Support (BLS) training
  • Completion of relevant student placements in primary care or community settings.
  • Training in immunisations and vaccinations (or willingness to undertake immediately on appointment).
  • Training in wound care, cervical screening, or long‑term condition management.
