Practice Educator - Genomics

The North Thames Genomic Medicine Service (NT GMS) is looking for a practice educator to join our team. We are open to applicants from scientific, technologist and bioinformatics backgrounds. This is a 12-month fixed term contract and there is the potential for a secondment opportunity.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape and deliver education and training for the genomics laboratory workforce, ensuring a sustainable, collaborative, and supportive approach across our laboratories.

The post holder will work closely with the Genomics Training Academy (GTAC) and other stakeholders to develop and implement high-quality training programmes and resources. While the primary focus will be on the laboratory workforce, you will also collaborate on initiatives to support education and development for other members of the GMS workforce where appropriate. This is a unique chance to influence workforce development in a rapidly evolving field, supporting staff to deliver high-quality genomic testing and services that transform patient care.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an individual who is:

  • Passionate about education and workforce development in healthcare science.
  • Experienced in delivering training and supporting staff development within a clinical or laboratory setting.
  • Skilled in building collaborative relationships and driving positive change.
  • Knowledgeable about genomics and its application in clinical practice (experience in a genomic laboratory is desirable).

The North Thames GMS is at the forefront of delivering cutting‑edge genomic services in rare disease and cancer. Academic/Professional Qualification/Training

Experience/Knowledge
  • Experience of developing and managing training programmes for technical and scientific staff and for SpRs rotating through laboratories
  • Experience in lecturing to undergraduate or postgraduate students in genomics or a related discipline
  • Experience of assessing coursework of scientists as part of the national STP
  • Experience of supporting development of HCPC portfolios
  • Experience of building, maintaining and utilising successful relationships with all staff and with stakeholders
  • Experience of managing within a diagnostic genomics laboratory service
  • Experience of difficult HR situations with staff
Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to deliver teaching and training on highly complex subjects within the Genetics field
  • Expert knowledge of the Genomics STP curriculum and assessment processes.
  • Able to collaborate constructively with managers of internal and external partners to create the conditions for successful partnership working
  • Evidence of the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams to deliver best performance
  • Ability to analyse complex problems and to develop practical and workable solutions to address them
