Practice Development Midwife

The closing date is 16 December 2025

Practice Development Midwife - with a focus on preceptorship.

The post holder will be involved in the designing, implementation and delivery of education to all members of the maternity multi‑professional team. This role, however, has a significant focus on the support of newly qualified midwives throughout the preceptorship period, specifically coordinating the preceptorship package and facilitating a supportive environment, thereby enabling effective learning and professional development. The post holder will have responsibility for identifying, supporting, and evaluating newly qualified midwives' learning and development during the preceptorship period, ensuring that learning activities adhere to the national Department of Health Preceptorship Framework. This support extends to line‑manager responsibilities for a number of this group of staff, as well as working alongside newly qualified midwives to provide clinical support.

Main duties of the job
  • Line‑manage a group of NQMs, and as such coordinate their progress through the preceptorship package; complete all Trust onboarding processes whilst always ensuring fairness.
  • Work alongside NQMs, participating in established roster patterns to provide a 24/7 support mechanism for band 5 midwives.
  • Review and support current training and preceptorship packages in partnership with the Professional Practice and maternity risk and governance teams, Obstetricians, Professional Midwifery Advocates (PMA’s), HEIs and local training and education boards/networks; develop creative ways of learning by building on what currently works well and be innovative in using opportunities and different methods/ways to improve, thereby improving the experience and outcomes for newly qualified midwives at the end of their preceptorship programme.
  • Maintain accurate records of the progress of the preceptees through the preceptorship programme, including all managerial conversations, in line with Trust policies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Training and Development across the organisation to implement and support an appropriate Preceptorship Programme, and coordinate staff rotation, preceptor training and allocation in order to maximise the learning and consolidation for newly qualified members of the team.
  • Participate in the auditing of the effectiveness of the preceptorship programme, ensuring that learning and improvement remain a priority within the wider teams.
