About the Role Stockport Council is seeking a dedicated and passionate Personal Adviser to join our Leaving Care Team, supporting young people aged 16–25 as they transition into adulthood. As a Personal Adviser, you will work closely with young people who are or have been looked after by the Local Authority—providing practical support, completing statutory responsibilities, building strong relationships, and helping shape their future pathways.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out statutory duties for looked after children in line with the Children Act 1989, the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000, and related regulations.
  • Manage a caseload, maintaining accurate records and completing statutory recordings.
  • Contribute to and deliver Pathway Plans, conducting assessments and reviews with young people.
  • Support young people aged 21+ wishing to resume education, training, or requiring additional support.
  • Provide practical guidance to promote welfare, independence, and financial capability.
  • Maintain strong relationships with young people through regular contact and support.
  • Advocate for young people, ensuring their voice is central to planning and decision-making.
  • Work collaboratively with a wide range of agencies including education providers, health services, YOS, police, Early Help, housing, and more.
  • Support Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children in line with Home Office guidance.
  • Participate in duty rotas, multi-agency panels, and professional meetings.
  • Promote participation opportunities such as the Care Leavers Forum and mentoring scheme.
  • Provide support and guidance to social workers preparing young people for adulthood.
Person Specification – What We’re Looking For Essential
  • Experience supporting care leavers or working with young people.
  • Knowledge of Leaving Care legislation.
  • Strong assessment, recording, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young people and partner agencies.
  • Strong digital skills to engage young people online.
  • NVQ Level 3 in childcare or a relevant qualification.
  • Ability to drive and access to a vehicle for work.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, safeguarding, and Council values.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to converse comfortably and accurately in spoken English (Fluency Duty).
  • Flexibility and a positive approach to change.
