Deliveringa range of orthodontic solutions including fixed appliances, aesthetic options,and clear aligner therapy (e.g., Invisalign)
Workingcollaboratively with dentists, therapists, and support staff to ensure seamlesspatient journeys
Maintainingaccurate clinical records and upholding the highest standards of clinicalgovernance
Communicatingclearly with patients and their families to explain treatment options andprogress

Responsible forproviding specialist-level orthodontic assessment, diagnosis and treatmentplanning for children and young people referred into the NHS Primary Care (PDS)orthodontic service, ensuring high-quality patient care across Cornwall and theIsles of Scilly.
Key accountabilities:
1. Specialistclinical assessment and treatment planning
Triage all incoming orthodontic referrals,assessing eligibility, prioritising appropriately and ensuring patients aredirected to the correct care pathway in line with PDS referral criteria andnational guidelines.
Provide comprehensive specialist orthodonticassessment, diagnosis and treatment planning for patients meeting the criteriafor Level 3a care within the NHS PDS orthodontic service.
Determine suitability for orthodontic treatmentin primary care and initiate all case starts, ensuring high-quality,evidence-based clinical decision-making.
Produce clear, detailed written treatment plansand clinical records to support continuity of care by colleagues and futureappointments.
2. Delivery of specialist orthodontic care
Deliver orthodontic treatment for patientsreferred and deemed appropriate for management within primary care.
Ensure treatment is carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with national guidelines,commissioning requirements and Smile Togetherclinical standards
Referpatients appropriately to secondary care or other orthodontic providers wherecomplex needs exceed the scope of the PDS service.
3. Clinicalleadership, support and supervision
Provide expert clinical advice, guidance andsecond opinions to orthodontic colleagues, DWSI clinicians, therapists andgeneral dentists.
Support, mentor and supervise the OrthodonticTherapist (once appointed), ensuring effective delegation and adherence to GDCScope of Practice.
Offer developmental support and structuredfeedback to dentists, therapists and nurses wishing to develop skills inorthodontics.
Work collaboratively across multiple sites,contributing to a cohesive, well-governed clinical service.
4. Serviceimprovement, governance and professional standards
Support the Clinical Leadership Team withorthodontic expertise, contributing to clinical governance, service improvementinitiatives, and pathway development.
Participate in clinical audit, peer review, casediscussions, planning and development sessions, and other activities thatenhance service quality and patient outcomes.
Ensure compliance with all clinical governancerequirements, including safe working practices, safeguarding, radiationprotection, infection prevention and control, and the reporting of accidents,incidents and near misses.
Maintain accurate, timely and high-qualityclinical documentation in line with GDC, NHS and Smile Together standards.
5. Performance,professional development and CPD
Deliver an agreed volume of case starts per year(currently 300), contributing to achievement of contract targets and serviceefficiency.
Maintain and continually develop specialistclinical competence through ongoing CPD, reflective practice and engagementwith the Smile Together training portal (Agilio), CPD policy and externaleducational providers.
Develop and maintain a Personal Development Plan(PDP) in accordance with GDC requirements, engaging fully with appraisal andrevalidation processes.
6. Communication,team integration and representation
Work effectively with clinical andadministrative teams across multiple sites, ensuring smooth patient pathwaysand consistent service delivery.
Act as a positive ambassador for SmileTogethers vision, mission and values, modelling professional behaviours at alltimes.
Represent the service professionally ininteractions with patients, families, colleagues and external partners.
Maintain effective IT and digital record-keepingskills, including proficiency in the Practice Management System and digitalorthodontic workflows.
