Job description
Duties
  • Staff information counter in a visitor center.
  • Answer questions on a variety of subjects.
  • Present limited and repetitive pre‑established talks including introductions to films, map talks, and static exhibit interpretation.
  • Orient hikers to conditions and equipment needs.
  • Guide small parties (up to 20 people) on short walks.
  • Some park locations issue backcountry camping permits and provide backcountry camping information.
Additional duties for GS‑5
  • Perform duties including programs that require application of broad subject‑matter knowledge of the park.
  • Guide large groups (up to 50 people) on longer walks or programs.
  • Provide a wide range of services to park visitors.
  • Orient and explain current park events and warn of safety hazards.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Background investigation and favorable adjudication required.
  • Selective Service registration required for males.
  • Uniform allowance provided; uniform may be required.
  • On‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work may be required.
  • Motor vehicle operation may be required; a valid driver’s license is required.
Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date (02/15/2026). Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Resumes must be two single‑sided pages and include dates, hours worked, and clear duties.

Education

To qualify based on education, submit transcripts. Transcripts must be official and submitted before work begins.

Physical Demands

Work involves standing, walking, carrying backpacks, tools, and rescue equipment. Rough surfaces and inclines are common.

Work Environment

Regular exposure to moderate discomforts, high/low temperatures, confined spaces, and adverse weather conditions.

Cost of Living Allowance (COLA)
  • Alaska: 3.00% (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau 1.49%).
  • Hawaii: 8.64% (Hawaii Island 2.91%).
  • Puerto Rico: 2.49%.
  • U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam: 11.88%.
