Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Work with Board colleagues to shape and agree the Trust's overall strategy, business plan and corporate objectives
  • Contribute to effective decision-making and constructive debate within the Board
  • Develop open, constructive relationships with Executive Directors, providing support and challenge while respecting executive accountability
  • Seek assurance that the Trust complies with its statutory, regulatory and legal responsibilities as an NHS Foundation Trust
  • Ensure high standards of corporate and clinical governance in line the Foundation Trust Code of Governance, UK Corporate Governance Code and FRC Guidance on Board Effectiveness
  • Oversee financial planning and performance against Trust strategy, ensuring robust financial controls and risk management processes are in place
  • Participate in, and where appropriate chair, Board Committees and contribute to their effectiveness
  • Hold the Executive team to account for performance and leadership culture, including contributing to executive appointment, appraisal and remuneration arrangements
  • Work with the Council of Governors to strengthen local accountability to patients, members and the public
  • Promote the Trust's vision, values and priorities and enhance its reputation with key stakeholders and partners
  • Act as an ambassador for the Trust across the local health system and wider health, research and education sectors

Person specification
Essential criteria
  • Working effectively at a strategic and senior level in a complex organisation, with a good knowledge of governance and risk and a demonstrable track record in supporting the delivery and monitoring the performance of high-quality services, in either the private or public sector.
  • A genuine interest in healthcare issues and the local health economy, with a commitment to the values and principles of the NHS and public service, and the values of the organisation. Role model an inclusive and supporting culture
  • Strong commitment to personal learning and professional development throughout your career (you may be degree educated but not essential). Ability to motivate and enthuse others to support and lead.
  • A commitment to understanding and addressing the needs of the service users and in particular to address inequalities in access and outcomes Politically astute, able to grasp relevant issues and understand relationships between different partners in health and social care locally and nationally
Desirable criteria
  • Bring perspective on digital, data and AI led delivery Support the safe, ethical and responsible use of technology
  • Sufficient time and commitment to fulfil the role. Ability to meet the 'fit and proper' persons test as required by the Trust's provider licence and the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.
