Overview

Neurodevelopmental Specialist Nurse – Band 7

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, forward thinking practitioner with experience of Neurodevelopmental Conditions and a special interest in ASD to join our Specialist Children and Young People’s Service (SCYPS) in Newham. The post holder will contribute to the development of a service for the assessment and review of children with neurodevelopmental conditions (primarily autistic spectrum disorder). They will work in partnership with Community Paediatricians, GPs and universal services to ensure delivery of an effective pathway, inclusive of wider community support. In addition, the post holder will contribute to the development and ongoing review of care pathways, policies, audits of service outcomes and develop waiting list initiatives to achieve agreed targets.

The post holder will contribute to or lead multi-professional assessments of neurodevelopmental conditions in children and young people referred to the Child Development Service. Providing specialist nursing practice across professional boundaries and develop streamlined patient care pathways between nursing, GPs and paediatricians, setting up shared care arrangements for each child as appropriate. Assessment outcomes will be discussed and agreed with patients, carers and other health care professionals, promoting health education and self-management whilst keeping the child, young person and family at the centre of all care.

Responsibilities
  1. Contribute to multi-professional assessments of neurodevelopmental conditions, with a specific focus on ASD, in children and young people referred to the Child Development Service. Utilising up to date and evidence based assessment techniques and tools, assessing information from education providers and parents/carers alongside observation of the young person. This may include specialist assessments in clinic, and observations in educational settings.
  2. Provide specialist nursing practice across professional boundaries and develop and streamline patient care pathways between nursing, AHPs, GPs and paediatricians. Liaising closely with other services in order to provide a co-ordinated and seamless service for patients.
  3. Supporting the ongoing development of care pathways for ASD and other conditions by reviewing current caseload, referral, assessment and review criteria to assist in developing a service that provides efficient and effective pathways.
  4. Discuss and agree assessment outcomes with patients, carers and other health care professionals, promoting health education and self-management.
