Working as part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance, based at the James Paget University Hospital Great Yarmouth, you will have the opportunity to work as part of a cutting edge Laboratory encompassing Specimen Reception, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Specimen Reception team within the Blood Science Spoke Laboratory at the James Paget University Hospital. The successful candidate will perform pre-analytical tasks that contribute to the delivery of the pathology service to the James Paget University hospital and sample preparation for services performed by NNUH. You will work closely with clinicians, assist and support the multi-disciplinary team in delivering a timely and high quality service to our users.

Knowledge of computers is a requirement. Essential qualities we require are an ability to work within a team, good communication skills and an ability to work unsupervised. You must be able to work under pressure and be able to meet deadlines, be flexible and adaptable and show that you are motivated and willing to develop your knowledge and skill.

Main duties of the job

To support the effective, consistent and efficient running of Spoke Blood Sciences services. Perform a range of routine and non-routine tasks within Specimen Reception and relevant laboratory areas. Obtain samples for biological testing, perform standard biological tests, process blood and other fluids for analysis ensuring sample integrity is maintained at all times. This role requires the daily use of the Pathology IT systems to a very high level of accuracy and speed when inputting patient demographic and test data. Ensure that all duties within their service are carried out in accordance with the Trust and Departmental policies.

Job responsibilities
  • Electronic transfer of patient details and requests via bar-code scanning into the Pathology IT system.
  • Manual inputting of patient details and test requests into the laboratory computer system.
  • Scanning requested forms into the laboratory information system database (if used).
  • Labelling and preparing patients blood, urine, and other fluids for analysis utilising aseptic techniques.
  • Sample centrifugation, separation of serum from red cells and pipetting serum aliquots for analysis ensuring that the minimum volume is available for the range of investigations requested
