Job Title: Mechanical Fitter

Location: Rochester

Salary: £32,988 per annum

Role Overview

We are looking for a motivated Mechanical Fitter to join our team, responsible for the repair, maintenance, and refurbishment of rail freight vehicles in line with company and customer standards. This is a practical, hands‑on role that involves working under wagons, manual lifting, loading / unloading equipment, and occasional tasks at height. You’ll use a wide range of mechanical skills including welding, grinding, fabricating, gauging, brake testing, and fault‑finding.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance and Visual Inspection and Brake Testing
  • Perform balanced maintenance and trip inspections as required
  • Undertake brake testing, fault diagnosis, and component replacement
  • Remove and fit brake blocks, wheelsets, and brake equipment
  • Deliver damage repairs, bogie overhauls, and wagon refurbishments
  • Support rail vehicle modifications and cosmetic tasks (cleaning, painting, decals)
  • Record all work accurately in line with company requirements
  • Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety legislation and site procedures
  • Assist with any other duties as directed by your line manager
Working Conditions

Work involves kneeling, crawling, and lifting materials under and around wagons

Line‑side tasks require walking on ballast and uneven ground
