Job summary

Job description

Role : Mechanical Design Engineer

Location : Saltash, Cornwall (100% onsite)

Experience Required : Minimum 3 years

Salary : £35,000–£50,000 per annum (DOE)

About the Role

This is a 100% onsite position due to the sensitive nature of the work. A full DBS check is required, covering financial, residential, and criminal history for the past 10 years. Applicants must have no unexplained career gaps or unaccounted time abroad.

You will join a globally established organisation, working alongside highly skilled engineers, developers, and manufacturing teams to design and develop innovative products that protect people and assets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop products from concept through to production.
  • Provide innovative, practical solutions to mechanical design challenges.
  • Prototype, test, and refine designs before production release.
  • Research new materials, technologies, and manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, internal departments, and suppliers.
  • Create concept designs based on customer requirements.
  • Design components using manufacturing techniques such as:
    • Plastic injection moulding
    • CNC machining (plastics and metals)
    • Sheet metal
    • Vacuum forming
    • Aluminium and plastic extrusions
  • Build and evaluate prototypes.
  • Liaise with suppliers to optimise designs for manufacture.
  • Produce product costings and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Draft drawings and associated documentation.
  • Write engineering change notes to release products into production.
Qualifications & Training (Essential)
  • BSc / BEng in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
Technical Experience (Essential)
  • Minimum 5 years industry experience
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software
  • Experience developing concepts from requirements
  • CNC machining (plastics and metals)
  • Plastic injection moulding
  • Prototyping electro‑mechanical solutions
  • Experience creating BOMs
  • Product testing and evaluation
  • Technical report writing
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office
Technical Experience (Desirable)
  • SolidWorks 3D CAD
  • Experience with sheet metal, vacuum forming, and extrusion processes
  • Experience working within strict QA and inspection guidelines
