National Slate Museum Redevelopment Project

The Marketing and Communications Project Manager will be based full time at the National Slate Museum, Llanberis.

This is an exciting opportunity to play your part in the transformation of one of Amgueddfa Cymru’s best-loved museums. The National Slate Museum Redevelopment Project will conserve, improve and interpret the exceptional Amgueddfa Llechi site and create a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) gateway supporting traditional skills, learning and wellbeing.

The project will engage and inspire both communities and visitors, connecting people to the remarkable story of the slate industry and the globally significant landscape it has shaped.

This project will work closely with partners including Cyngor Gwynedd as they deliver on ambitious plans to redevelop Parc Padarn country park surrounding the museum. The redevelopment project will integrate with wider developments as part of a vision for sustainable tourism that is sensitive and responsive to local communities.

Amgueddfa Cymru is committed to creating new and different spaces where people see themselves and feel that they belong. The Project will work with local communities and voices to create inspirational spaces and experiences offering a unique perspective on the history of the slate quarrying communities that shaped this area of Wales. The Project will:

  1. Conserve and renovate the significant Grade 1 buildings and collections of Gilfach Ddu and safeguard and share the intangible cultural heritage through the preservation and development of traditional skills related to the slate industry.
  2. As the gateway to the World Heritage Site, increase understanding of the Northwest Wales Slate Landscape UNESCO designation for communities and visitors through innovative, high quality, community-centred interpretation of the Internationally Significant Slate Story.
  3. Enable more people from all backgrounds to learn throughout life, develop their skills and be creative. Create inspiring and engaging opportunities, resources and spaces for developing traditional craft skills, learning, volunteering, employment, wellbeing and creativity.
  4. Place Environmental Sustainability at the heart of the museum. Enable sustainable and decarbonisation improvements to the museum buildings and environs, infrastructure, and operations. Reflect the site’s historic innovative approach to sustainability in the interpretation.

Better connect people and communities with Amgueddfa Cymru’s diverse collections, ensuring everyone is represented. Involve people and communities in telling the inspiring stories of local, national and international significance of the slate industry, its people and the environment, on site and digitally.

Improve public enjoyment, access and wellbeing through the visitor experience by improving facilities for all at Gilfach Ddu and create opportunities to explore the museum digitally.

The National Slate Museum currently attracts c.150,000 free visits a year. As a largely outdoor industrial heritage offer, visitor patterns are very seasonal with August averaging 944 visitors per day compared to 115 visitors per day in January.

A key objective of the project is to create an exemplar of sustainability that supports communities from across northwest Wales, economically, socially and culturally.

This role is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, UK Government via Cyngor Gwynedd as part of the Llewyrch o\'r Llechi project, Welsh Government and other funders.

Main Purpose of job

As Marketing Project Manager, you will develop and deliver creative and impactful campaigns which amplify the work and vision of the National Slate Museum Redevelopment Project.

You will develop and execute a comprehensive marketing plans and campaigns to raise awareness, engage stakeholders, and foster community support for the project to strategically grow engagement with new and existing audiences.

Aligning your work closely with Amgueddfa Cymru’s new marketing and brand framework, as Project Manager you will develop creative targeted campaigns and content that will aim to deliver measurable increase in visitors from under-represented audiences, increasing repeat off-peak visiting from local communities and maintaining the existing audience base.

You will do the following:

  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across the project, marketing and communications teams and other departments to create creative campaigns and tell compelling stories that engage diverse audiences in all of the museum’s work, to build awareness and understanding of the story of slate, whilst also maximise commercial and fundraising opportunities.
  • Play a key role in ensuring the strategic coherence of brand, marketing activity across Amgueddfa Cymru. You will collaborate with in-house and external data teams to ensure activities are informed and measured by audience insights.
  • Own and develop marketing and communications plans, aligning all parts of the marketing funnel, to deliver the project objectives and grow the priority audiences identified in the project’s Audience Development Strategy.
  • Be responsible for providing exceptional marketing and communications delivery across a broad range of channels, with particular focus on digital.
  • You will have proven expertise in devising and implementing integrated marketing and communications plans for a diverse set of stakeholders. As skilled copywriter, you will be experienced in create inspiring, compelling and impactful copy that embodies our brand tone of voice, articulates key messages and our unique value proposition to connect and inspire people to engage with the museum through a variety of touch points.
  • Delivering the project’s Communications strategy, the successful candidate will ensure that the Amgueddfa Cymru and National Slate museum\'s vision and redevelopment plans are effectively communicated to diverse audiences, to protect, maintain and grow the museum’s profile and reputation locally, nationally and internationally.
  • As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site partnership, you will be expected to work closely with Llechi Cymru and the wider Slate Stori Network to ensure WHS priorities are reflected in the visual identity of the National Slate Museum and its Gateway role.
  • Line managing the marketing content officer – National Slate Museum, you will be responsible for ensuring that creative, inspiring, and engaging Amgueddfa Cymru content is delivered across all locations and multiple marketing and communications channels.
  • Leading the marketing and communications workstream, this role will have day-to-day operational autonomy, with clear and regular reporting to the Project Director and the Head of Marketing and Communications. You will be expected to act as an expert adviser to teams across the project on promotion of their programmes including capital works, collections, interpretation, exhibitions, fundraising and development, engagement and activity.
