Job Summary

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for Lung Cancer Screening Nurses to join our Lung Cancer Screening Service working across Cheshire and Merseyside. The post holder should have a background in Respiratory Medicine and will undertake telephone assessments to screen and refer for low‑dose CT chest scans to help identify early stages of lung cancer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform telephone assessments using a validated risk assessment tool and refer suitable patients for low‑dose CT scans.
  • Work autonomously as well as part of a multidisciplinary team implementing Every Contact Counts for onward referrals.
  • Provide nurse‑led clinics.
  • Formulate individualised pathways with patients and carers.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of chronic and acute respiratory management.
  • Interpret spirometry results.
  • Adhere to LHCH policies and procedures.
  • Engage in audit and information collection.
  • Manage referrals for patients with a clinical requirement and identify when medical attention is needed.
  • Use recognised referral pathways for worsening conditions.
  • Develop clinical skills in history taking, examination, assessment and/or treatment of respiratory disease.
  • Involve patients, carers and relatives in providing information about the project.
  • Provide specialist knowledge, advice and support to colleagues, patients, carers and relatives where appropriate.
  • Utilise professional colleagues’ expertise while acknowledging role boundaries.
  • Undertake training to complete patient assessment, use shared decision tools and facilitate ongoing referrals.
  • Communicate effectively and compassionately, even in complex circumstances.
  • Deliver sensitive, complex information to patients, carers, relatives and professionals about the project.
  • Proactively manage referral tracking and outcomes for CT scans and other investigations.
  • Ensure onward referral to relevant services such as smoking cessation and pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Understand evidence‑based care processes and know where to obtain evidence.
  • Collaborate with professional agencies to meet patient needs.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, carers/relatives and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Observe and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.
  • Participate in annual performance reviews to identify personal development needs.
  • Implement infection control through induction training and ongoing compliance with Trust guidance.
  • Follow the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Practice.
  • Exercise judgement, discretion and decision making in line with the project protocol.
