Job description

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Band 6 Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our multidisciplinary lung cancer team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in delivering high‑quality, person‑centred care to patients diagnosed with or being investigated for lung cancer.

As a Lung Cancer CNS, you will be responsible for supporting patients throughout their cancer journey from initial referral and diagnosis through to treatment, follow‑up, and palliative care where appropriate. You will act as a key worker, coordinating care, offering specialist advice, emotional support, and ensuring timely access to services across the care pathway.

You will work closely with the lung cancer MDT, including respiratory consultants, oncologists, radiologists, specialist nurses, allied health professionals, and palliative care teams. You will also contribute to service development, patient education, and clinical audits to support continuous improvement in cancer care.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for a registered nurse with experience in oncology, respiratory, or palliative care who is looking to further develop their specialist skills and autonomy in a supportive environment.

Main duties of the job
  • Act as Key Worker for patients with suspected or confirmed lung cancer, providing expert nursing support and care coordination across the diagnostic, treatment, and follow‑up pathways.
  • Deliver Holistic Needs Assessments for patients diagnosed with lung cancer.
  • Provide Specialist Advice and Education to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals regarding lung cancer, treatment options, symptom management, and supportive care.
  • Support the Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary Team by participating in MDT meetings, contributing clinical knowledge to support decision‑making and care planning.
  • Coordinate Investigations and Treatments, ensuring patients move through the cancer pathway efficiently and with minimal delays, in line with national cancer targets.
  • Offer Psychological Support and signposting to appropriate services.
  • Liaise with Other Health and Social Care Professionals, including oncologists, respiratory consultants, palliative care, and primary care teams to ensure seamless care across all settings.
  • Contribute to Service Improvement, audits, patient feedback collection, and quality initiatives to enhance the patient experience and outcomes.
  • Promote Health Education and Smoking Cessation, encouraging lifestyle changes that can improve quality of life.
  • Support Training and Education, providing mentorship and guidance to junior staff, students, or those new to cancer care.
