Overview

The Legal & Governance department is looking for a pragmatic and collaborative Legal Counsel based in London (hybrid working) to serve as a trusted legal advisor to internal stakeholder clients and support the activities of the broader Legal & Governance team.

The role will serve as a Legal Business Partner to numerous areas of the business, focusing on (i) reviewing and negotiating a wide range of contracts, (ii) providing legal advice and support on transactions and projects and (iii) assisting with commercial contract disputes (as necessary).

The role is for a fixed term 12-month contract.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review, draft and negotiate a wide variety of legal agreements, with a focus on commercial contracts, and assist on a full range of matters upon which legal advice is sought
  • Serve as the primary legal contact for numerous functional teams within the business, providing timely, proactive and pragmatic advice and support on a wide range of legal issues to help the business achieve its goals and mitigate legal risks
  • Provide legal advice and support on transactions and other initiatives, including M&A, joint ventures, divestitures, restructures, and liquidations
  • Keep up to date with legal and regulatory developments that directly impact Arch and provide proactive and pragmatic advice to the business on interpretation and implementation of those developments
  • Assist with the management of litigation, disputes and enforcement of contracts for the areas of the business overseen
  • Instruct and manage external counsel, in line with the Policy on the Engagement of External Counsel, for the areas of the business overseen
  • Assist other members of the Legal & Governance team with workload, as required, and collaborate with legal counterparts in the United States, Bermuda and Europe
  • Review and draft legal policies and procedures and assist with the implementation of best practice, including by providing training to employees
  • Contribute to the department’s knowledge base, forms and precedents

Qualifications & Experience
  • Qualified solicitor with 2-5 years PQE (indicative)
  • In-house legal experience, ideally in the insurance industry
