Job description

New Year, New Role an opportunity to make a real difference to the resilient supply of blood components to hospitals.

You'll join the Hospital Customer Service team, leading a nationally significant project between NHSBT and hospitals to strengthen the resilience of the blood supply. With recent stock alerts highlighting the need for collaborative action, we are looking to extend our partnership with hospitals to improve ordering, stock holding, usage, and overall inventory management within transfusion laboratories.

This is an exciting 12-month opportunity to use your transfusion and biomedical science expertise to help NHSBT maintain an uninterrupted supply of blood components across England. NHSBT is taking action throughout the supply chain, from donation to issue, and this role will act as a key link between NHSBT and our hospital customers. You will have regular contact with colleagues who provide services directly to hospitals, as well as the Blood Stocks Management Scheme, Patient Blood Management teams, and our clinical specialists. You will promote NHSBT while advocating for hospitals and their patients, supported by data, local insight, teamwork, and clinical guidance.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be responsible for leading a project to support resilience of blood component supply to hospitals and will be working at a national, regional, trust and hospital level to influence and champion best practice. Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Working extensively with internal teams such as the Blood Stocks Management Scheme, Patient Blood Management, Transfusion Consultants, Logistics and the Hospital Customer Service team
  2. Developing and managing the project to achieve the desired outcomes with hospitals by working with and supporting NHSBT and its partners
  3. Driving the project forward which will require influencing other directorates and external colleagues to meet agreed targets and objectives
  4. Delivering training and education to internal and external stakeholders to improve use of systems, data and stock utilisation / management.
  5. The remit of the role spans a wide range of NHSBT products and services including blood and blood components, stock management and patient blood management initiatives
  6. Supporting the key objectives of the Transfusion function
  7. Working on own initiative and develop responses to complex and challenging situations

You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.

Job responsibilities

Qualifications
  • Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist (which must be maintained)
  • MSc in transfusion/transplant or relevant subject OR equivalent highly specialist knowledge gained by examination of a professional body e.g. FIBMS, BBTS, BSHI or equivalent specialist experience
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)
Experience
  • Current and extensive knowledge of transfusion science
  • Ability to discuss current clinical transfusion problems with laboratory and clinical staff
  • Experience and understanding of the blood supply process and stock management practices within blood services and hospitals. It is essential to understand the challenges within a hospital environment, as well as the complex processes from donor through to validation.
  • Experience working on projects and an understanding of basic project management principles Project experience is essential for this role.
  • Experience presenting complex information in different formats to a range of internal and external audiences. This includes report writing that clearly explains data and draws conclusions.
  • Experience of setting objectives for direct or indirect reports and undertaking or contributing performance reviews
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
