Overview

Do you have a passion for Hospital Pharmacy and a proven track record in a clinical field? Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a senior Pharmacist role within the Cardiology department. The post leads on services to Cardiology while contributing to the Pharmacy team as a Specialist Lead Pharmacist. The department is committed to advancing Pharmacy Practice and embedding Medicines Management systems into patient care. The successful candidate will work in a senior capacity, influence the patient care pathway, and promote evidence-based, cost-effective prescribing within a multidisciplinary team. Training and support will be provided, and continuing professional development is essential. A prescribing qualification or progression towards one is envisaged.

Main duties
  • Lead and manage day-to-day delivery of clinical pharmacy services to Medical-Cardiology wards.
  • Develop, evaluate and improve clinical pharmacy services to meet the needs of the Medical-Cardiology areas, in line with objectives set by the Assistant Director of Pharmacy – Clinical Services.
  • Ensure a consistently high level of pharmaceutical service in line with service objectives.
  • Provide a framework for the safe, effective, and economical use of medicines within the specialist area using medicines management and clinical governance principles.
  • Develop and maintain general Hospital Pharmacy skills and specialist knowledge in Cardiology and Medical medicines.
  • Act as a key resource of expertise for the Pharmacy Department and wider Trust within the Specialist Clinical Pharmacy area.
  • Prescribe in line with Trust policies and procedures (subject to necessary qualification).
  • Provide a Specialist Clinical Pharmacy service to the Cardiology and General Medicine directorates and advise the MDT to support care of cardiology and medical patients.
  • Assist in controlling annual drug expenditure for the Cardiology and General Medicine directorates.
  • Maintain commitment to advancing clinical skills and practice; attend weekly teaching sessions and development opportunities.
  • Mentor and teach students, trainees and rotating Pharmacists; provide teaching sessions.
  • Contribute to infection prevention and prudent antibiotic usage; support the antimicrobial stewardship programme under the Lead Pharmacist Antimicrobials.
Person specification
Qualifications
  • Essential:
    • Vocational Masters degree in Pharmacy
    • 1 year pre-registration training and experience
    • General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) registered
    • Postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy at diploma level or equivalent
    • Prescribing qualification or working towards it
  • Desirable:
    • MSc Clinical Pharmacy
    • Registration with the RPS
    • Management/Leadership qualification

    • Experience in multidisciplinary communication and staff supervision/management
    • Experience in developing policies, procedures and guidelines; experience in clinical audit
  • Desirable:
    • Published audit and research
