Lead Nurse in Dermatology – Ormskirk Hospital
The post-holder will provide expert leadership and management within a multi-disciplinary team and deliver highly advanced specialist/clinical nursing expertise for dermatology patients. The role includes advising primary and secondary care clinicians on setting up, implementing, delivering and evaluating patient care using evidence-based practice and ensuring services align with national, regional and local guidance, standards, protocols and policies.
The post-holder will contribute to senior management and governance frameworks within the care group and be line manager to band 7 and band 6 nurse specialists/nurse practitioners. A job plan will be agreed with the post holder and manager and reviewed annually as part of appraisal, including appropriate clinical supervision.

Responsibilities
- Provide expert leadership and management within a multi-disciplinary team and deliver highly advanced specialist/clinical nursing expertise for dermatology patients.
- Advise primary and secondary care clinicians on setting up, delivery and evaluation of patient care, utilising evidence-based practice; provide services in line with national, regional and local guidance, standards and policies to achieve positive patient outcomes.
- Contribute to senior management and governance frameworks within the care group and act as line manager to band 7 and band 6 nurse specialists/nurse practitioners.
- Manage the service budget in conjunction with the Directorate Manager and ADM; ensure KPI data is collected and submitted to commissioners and respond to commissioner queries.
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice; promote and maintain standards of professional practice in line with the NMC Code and Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice.
Line Management / Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervision of staff as required by the service, including appraisal and performance management.
- Line management of band 7 and band 6 nurse specialists/nurse practitioners.
- Lead on team coordination, recruitment, deployment of staff and oversight of equipment use per financial instructions.
- Monitor financial resources and support efficiencies; manage service changes with financial implications; implement HR processes such as sickness/absence management.
- Contribute to annual business planning and assist in commissioning decisions; manage budgets and ensure KPI/CQUIN submission within time frames.
Quality
- Facilitate a high-quality, cost-effective specialist service through monitoring, audits and quality initiatives.
- Lead developments related to the speciality to promote high-quality, patient-focused services.
- Attend and contribute to multi-professional team meetings; set, monitor and review standards of care; initiate corrective action as needed.
- Identify and address unsafe environments for patients and staff; escalate concerns to the Matron.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
- Coordinate teaching and education programmes to impart specialist knowledge to colleagues, patients, carers and relatives.
- Support patients to develop self-management skills; lead on patient education and information per Trust policy.
- Liaise with Practice Education Facilitators to provide student attachments with direct supervision and training.
- Support CPD for nursing colleagues, gather feedback to improve education provision, and contribute to curriculum development at local/regional levels.
- Assess and update own educational needs per NMC requirements; raise awareness of specialist conditions across the organisation.
Research & Audit
- Monitor standards of care and lead quality improvements through benchmarking, audits and research.
- Support data collation for internal quality rounds and external assessments (e.g., CQC); lead Serious Untoward Incidents (SUIs), PSI complaints and litigation claims when required.
- Ensure lessons learned are used to improve patient services; participate in governance meetings and submit required activity data/annual reports.
- Promote nursing research, publish outcomes where appropriate, and disseminate findings to staff.
- Lead reporting of clinical incidents/concerns and ensure adherence to medicines administration regulations.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- NMC registration on Part 1
- Speciality-related certificated courses
- Degree level education; teaching/coaching/mentoring qualification; Leadership module at degree level or above; Independent Non-Medical Prescriber
Desirable
- Masters level or commitment to work towards
Knowledge & Experience
- Substantial year(s) post-registration experience; experience at band 7 in the dermatology speciality
- Experience in developing clinical pathways/protocols; experience of audit and research; multidisciplinary working
Skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills; change management; ability to teach and influence across boundaries
- Teamwork, prioritisation, and advanced specialist nursing skills; good organisational and IT skills
