Salary range : £45,091 - £49,282

Employer Pension contribution £9,829 - £10,743

Total (Salary + Pension) £54,921 - £60,025

Relocation packages are available for exceptional candidates out of area.

As a full-time permanent employee you’ll also enjoy 26 days of annual leave plus public and bank holidays, with your entitlement increasing to 31 days after five years’ continuous service. Additional leave purchase options and flexible working arrangements are also available.

About the role

As a Lawyer specialising in employment law you will provide expert legal advice and assistance to the Council and its directorates. You will draft and advise on a wide range of interesting and complex employment matters and support strategic projects that promote fair, compliant and effective workforce practices for the people of Devon.

You will join an experienced Employment Law specialist who will provide guidance and mentoring to support your professional development.

Your responsibilities will include :
  • Draft, review and advise on employment‑related documentation, including contracts of employment, settlement agreements, policies and collective agreements.
  • Support HR processes such as disciplinary, grievance, dismissal appeals and restructuring.
  • Conduct litigation, including advocacy in the Employment Tribunal.
  • Support major workforce projects and organisational change initiatives, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Provide training and guidance to officers on employment law and best practice.
  • Represent the Council in negotiations and liaise with external stakeholders, trade unions and legal advisors.
  • Contribute to policy development and continuous improvement in employment practices.
About You

You are a skilled employment lawyer with a passion for public service and a commitment to delivering practical, high‑quality legal solutions. You combine strong technical expertise in employment law with a pragmatic, solutions‑focused approach, advising senior stakeholders, managing complex cases and supporting organisational priorities with confidence and professionalism.

What we’re looking for :
  • Qualified solicitor, barrister or holder of a CILEX professional qualification with a strong background in employment law.
  • Previous experience advising on employment matters within the public sector or for public sector clients preferred but not essential.
  • Excellent drafting, advocacy, negotiation, time management and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and deliver clear pragmatic advice under pressure.
