Overview

As part of the Defence Intelligence Academy (DIA), the Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance College (ISR College) delivers world-class professional defence training and education to representatives of the British armed forces, wider UK government and international partners. We offer a range of short, long and face-to-face courses.

The ISR College is actively seeking specialists with an ability to contribute effectively within a high performing team to deliver Military GEOINT (GEOspatial INTelligence). GEOINT encompasses the disciplines of Geo-spatial Science, Geographic Information Systems, and Remote Sensing.

Role and Scope

The Burnham Lecturer (BL) GEOINT is responsible for planning, preparing and delivering modules on the ME Geo Tech course, and the GEOINT Officers\' Course in Geo-spatial Intelligence, accredited as a BSc (Hons) and an MSc by civilian academic partners. The post holder will also be responsible for planning, preparation and delivery of specialised short courses for Defence, as required by the business and Defence need. The output of training aims to provide Defence personnel with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to operate effectively within the Defence GEOINT enterprise, advising Command at Strategic, Operational and Tactical levels, including on operational deployments in remote areas with little support via reach back. The post holder will work with military and civilian instructor colleagues to design and deliver engaging, practical course material grounded in military context against the defined training requirements. The post holder is expected to engage with academia and industry to maintain professional competence, ensuring training delivery remains current as the disciplines develop. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. Flexibility to travel to other UK wide MOD locations to support training delivery at minimal notice is required.

Responsibilities
  • Design, delivery, and assessment of modules, pre and post-delivery.
  • Review, development, management and assurance of assessments, adhering to defence and academic partner policies.
  • Act as Module Leader and/or Module Manager as directed by line manager.
  • Mentoring and supervision of trainees completing dissertations at Level 6 and 7.
  • Continuing professional development to remain at the forefront of academic and industry thinking; represent the ISR College as a Subject Matter Expert.
  • Organise and deliver CPD for the faculty as part of continuous development of staff and trainees.
  • Assist in day-to-day management of the GEOINT faculty.
  • Collaborate with the Training Management Group (TMG) to ensure academic integrity of courses.
  • Influence and contribute to internal and external decision-making.
As a Burnham Lecturer, responsibilities include
  • Formal teaching duties including teaching, tutorials, student assessment and administration.
  • Management of learning programmes and curriculum development, admissions, counselling, accreditation/validation, course design, maintenance and development with academic partners.
  • Preparing and producing lesson plans and supporting course materials; incorporate Literacy and Numeracy into lessons as required.
  • Marking of student work and examinations, administration and feedback.
  • Management of student visit programmes and engagement in scholarly activity.
  • Delivering technical training while ensuring conformity to authorised specifications; providing a safe, inclusive learning environment.
  • Compliance with responsibilities to students with Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) and related policies.
  • Acting as a role model in line with Defence Trainer Code of Conduct and Civil Service Code of Conduct.
  • Monitoring student welfare and addressing concerns through the appropriate channels.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement; maintaining own specialist subject matter expertise; undertaking a minimum of 5 hours CPD per annum.
  • Participating in internal and external evaluation audits as required.
  • Flexibility to travel to other UK wide MOD locations at minimal notice.
Essential and Desirable Criteria
  • Essential: Minimum Level 6 Degree (Bachelor) in Remote Sensing, Information Systems and Web Mapping Services, GIS, Geodesy, Geo-Science, Surveying, or relevant subject.
  • Essential: Proactive and innovative with excellent communication skills; able to articulate clearly across multiple channels.
  • Essential: Strong organisational skills; able to work independently and as part of a team; able to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Essential: Lead, encourage and champion inclusivity and diversity; hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Role Specific Training: Within 6 months, obtain the Defence Trainer Course (DTC); apply for and attain Recognised Teacher Status (RTS) through TMG within 6 months.
  • Desirable: Experience in Defence military training environment; knowledge of Defence Geospatial and wider intelligence communities; experience with academia; Cert Ed (Level 5) is desirable but must be obtained within two full academic years.
  • Evidence of qualification/licence/membership required at interview; all qualifications must be held at point of application and be in date.
