Main duties of the job

To be a skilledmember of the nursing team caring for critically ill patients in a highlycomplex environment. To provide a highstandard of individualised care to the patients & their families, inaccordance with agreed policies and within available resources.

UHSis one of only two places in the south of England to offer adults and childrenfull onsite major trauma care provision. Were a designated major trauma centreand has general and specialist critical care areas which were awardedoutstanding for leadership in our recent CQC inspection.

To maintain high standards of nursing care andensuring that nursing objectives are achieved using a systematic approach tonursing care.

To assess, plan, deliver and evaluateindividualised patient centred care and provide support and advice to otherstaff as appropriate.

To receive patients and their relatives inaccordance with recognised policies and ensure that they are kept informed oftreatment and progress.

To arrange the care of patient's property, inaccordance with Unit policies and within the limitations of hospitalresponsibilities.

To liaise with all members of themulti-professional team to ensure that all treatments are correctly carried outin accordance with given policy.

To give and receive regular reports on the progressof patients, reporting immediately any changes in the patients condition tothe senior qualified nurse on duty or the medical staff as appropriate.

To maintain accurate records of observation,treatment, and care.

To participate in the checking and administrationof prescribed drugs (including controlled drugs) and other substances inaccordance with Trust policy.

To inform the sister/Charge Nurse of any untoward incidentsor problems affecting patients/staff/relative and visitors.

To inform Senior Sister/Charge Nurse any complaintreceived verbally from patients or relatives.

To adhere to theNMC Code of Conduct and Trust policies and procedures. Be familiar with thelocation of current files, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of resuscitation,major incident/fire & child protection procedures.

To act as apositive role model, demonstrating sound clinical judgement.

To co-ordinate therequirements and take part in the transfer of patients to other departmentswithin the Trust.

To maintain goodliaison with other nursing units and other hospital departments.

Being familiarwith and ensuring all medical equipment is functional, reporting any faults orpotential hazards and arranging for replacement as necessary.

To activelycontribute to ideas for enhancing patient care using evidence-based practice.
