Job description
Main Purpose of the Role

The Housing Inspector plays a critical role in ensuring that properties are appropriately utilised, remain safe, are well‑maintained and financially sustainable. This involves maintaining accurate and up‑to‑date records, ensuring that all databases and information systems reflect the current status of each of our properties.

A key aspect of the role is to proactively monitor compliance, taking into account legal, statutory, contractual, and regulatory requirements and taking immediate action where risks are identified. The Housing Inspector is responsible for producing and acting upon jeopardy reports to maintain statutory compliance.

Additionally, the role includes overseeing asset registers and making informed recommendations regarding investment, divestment and improvement that support the organisation's wider strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Regular assessment of homes
  • Ensuring compliance with Decent Homes Standard and HHSRS
  • Recording defects and developing repair specifications
  • Liaising with contractors for timely completion
  • Managing building projects end-to-end
  • Engaging with statutory bodies (planning authorities, building control, Building Safety Regulator)
  • Maintaining accurate asset records and systems
  • Leading on asset-related queries
  • Advising on suitability and sustainability of new assets
  • Building relationships with internal teams, partners, and external agencies
  • Contributing to projects ensuring assets remain safe and cost‑effective
Relevant essential skills and experience
  • A degree or relevant qualification in property, estates management, facilities, surveying, or similar e.g. RICS, CIOB
  • Awareness of asset management principles
  • Understanding of leases, service level agreements and dilapidations
  • Understanding of the golden thread, building safety gateways and the wider implications of the Building Safety Act
