Job description
Overview

We're looking for a motivated and hardworking Housekeeper to join the team on Ward 32B – Surgical Admissions Unit.

The post holder will work as an integral part of the ward team, assisting in the coordination of all patient facilities/services and ensuring a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. Main responsibilities include delivering cleaning, catering, and minor maintenance, as well as other tasks as determined by the Supervisory Sister.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Supervisory Sister in maintaining cleaning standards on the ward.
  • Clean general and specialist equipment (drip stands, commodes, toilets, bed pans, raised toilet seats) as per cleaning policy.
  • Keep the ward safe and tidy by removing clutter and performing room cleans.
  • Maintain upkeep of patients' bed areas and specialist surfaces/furnishings.
  • Clean isolation nursing areas.
  • Maintain a log of medical equipment and cleaning monitors.
  • Encourage and assist patients to order food, taking special needs and medical requirements into account.
  • Assist patients with eating, such as cutting food, placing it within reach, and providing encouragement.
  • Prepare and serve hot/cold snacks and meals, ensuring correct temperature and hygienic standards.
  • Wash equipment/utensils used in food preparation and serving.
  • Ensure the ward kitchen is clean and tidy, discard out‑of‑date food, and rotate stock.
  • Label and store refrigerated food correctly in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Coordinate extra meal requirements that may arise.
  • Provide access to fresh water for patients whose fluid intake is not medically restricted.
  • Monitor and audit service delivery (cleaning, food, linen, environment) at agreed frequency.
  • Assist with the defect call log book and coordinate ad‑hoc maintenance.
  • Assist with equipment monitoring and ensure equipment is safe and in working order.
  • Clean and prepare beds, handle linen.
  • Monitor access, security, and use of premises and facilities.
  • Respect patients' privacy and dignity during duties.
  • Communicate potential adverse behaviour and security breaches with the Supervisory Sister.
  • Use communication skills to manage and prevent aggression, escalating to senior staff as necessary.
  • Ensure safe storage of equipment and carry out repairs in line with Trust policy.
  • Welcome and guide visitors, liaise with staff.
  • Receive deliveries from AGVs, transport or collect equipment, consumables, and written information.
  • Respond to requests for general information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain and update paper‑based records as required.
Working Conditions

North Bristol NHS Trust employs over 12,000 staff and is a regional Major Trauma Centre. Successful applicants will normally commence at the minimum scale band unless they have previous NHS service at the same band. Progression through the scale is by annual increments.
