Job description
Overview

You will be working alongside other highway operatives, street lighting operatives and gully crews delivering highways functions and delivery of schemes. The service is responsible for keeping the highway safe for all road users. The role also comes with generous pension and annual leave provision with local government benefits and potential for overtime.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply tarmacking and kerbing skills as part of a frontline highway team.
  • Carry out routine and reactive maintenance on highways including pothole repairs, kerbing, and drainage.
  • Use up‑to‑date machinery and tools such as rollers, breakers and compactors.
  • Set up and remove temporary traffic management systems in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Complete job records and report defects using handheld devices or paperwork.
  • Work collaboratively with team members and supervisors to deliver high‑quality services.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in laying tarmac and kerbing for schemes and/or large repair and maintenance works.
  • Worked on live highway and understand health and safety requirements.
  • Commitment to continuous development and ability to work effectively within a diverse team.
  • Punctuality and reliable attendance to ensure daily work can be undertaken efficiently.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to drive 7.5 t vehicles as part of the role.
  • Some weekend working and out‑of‑hours call‑outs on a rota may be required; overtime will be paid.
Working Hours

Fixed hours 8 am–4 pm. Over‑time and out‑of‑hours work may be required.
