Healthcare Assistant - fixed term for a minimum duration of 9 months

We are seeking a motivated HealthcareAssistant (HCA) to join our supportive team to cover a period of maternityleave. The post holder will work as an integral member of the general practice team,providing support to clinicians in delivering high quality care. The role of the Healthcare Assistant isessential in supporting our patients with undertaking investigations such asblood tests, ECGs, annual health reviews for long term conditions, immunisationsand other injections. These investigationsinform the baseline management of our patient population.

Main duties of the job

Working under the direct supervision of the Business Manager & the Clinical supervisors and strictly in accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols (and where necessary, a patient specific direction), the Healthcare Assistant will assist the Practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.

Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

ECGrecording

Phlebotomy(including blood tests for specialist clinics, such as CHD or Diabetic clinic)

Chaperoningduties

Processingand management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses

Cleaningand Maintenance of clinical equipment register to ensure that servicing andcalibration of equipment is carried out in line with manufacturersrecommendations (generally annually)

Vaccine/coldchain storage, monitoring and recording

Surgicalequipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation

Preparingand maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patientcare interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minoroperations

Assistingin the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being

Undertakingspecific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated andtaught specifically in relation to that individual

Helpingto raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted

Assistingwith the collection and collation of data on needs related to health andwell-being

Theadministration of injections (e.g. Influenza, B12 etc.) under the strictdirection of a Patient Specific Direction.

Wellperson checks (such as senior screening)

Urinedips for analysis

Monitoringof blood pressure

Assistingwith minor surgery operations

Maintenance of the Practice Clinical equipmentregister, ensuring that all clinical equipment is serviced and calibrated inaccordance with the manufacturers recommendations. This also involvesarranging the annual clinical equipment check.

Maintaining the stock of patient informationleaflets to ensure they are current and relevant, ordering new stock anddisposing of old stock as necessary.

TheManagement of patients who are stable on anti-coagulation (using the coagucheck machine).

Dopplers

This list is not exhaustive and it isreasonable that the post holder takes on additional duties that arecommensurate with the role.

Thepost-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and managementof their own and others health and safety and infection control as defined inthe practice Health & Safety Policy and the practice Infection Controlpolicy and published procedures. This will include (but will not be limitedto):

Usingpersonal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines

Awarenessof national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory /contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines

Responsiblefor the correct and safe management of the specimens process includingcollection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storageand transport arrangements

Managementand maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practiceincluding provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff

Responsiblefor hand hygiene across the practice

Ownershipof infection control and clinically based patient care protocols, andimplementation of those protocols across the practice

Activeobservation of current working practices across the practice in relation toinfection control, cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that proceduresare followed and weaknesses / training needs are identified, escalating issuesas appropriate

Identifyingthe risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks across clinical and patient process

Makingeffective use of training to update knowledge and skills, and initiate andmanage the training of others across the full range of infection control andpatient processes

Monitoringpractice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control, ensuringthat provision of hand cleansing facilities, wipes etc are sufficient to ensurea good clinical working environment. Lack of facilities to be escalated asappropriate.

Safemanagement of sharps procedures including training, use, storage and disposal

Usingappropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy,clean and sterile, and safe way, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial /corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management

Activelyidentifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards andinfection hazards immediately when recognised

Keepingown work areas and general / patient areas generally clean, sterile,identifying issues and hazards / risks in relation to other work areas withinthe business, and assuming responsibility in the maintenance of generalstandards of cleanliness across the business in consultation (whereappropriate) with other sector managers

Undertakingperiodic infection control training

Routinemanagement of own team / team areas, and maintenance of work space standards

Wastemanagement including collection, handling, segregation, container management,storage and collection
