Job Summary
Hours per week: 18 to 21.5. Ideally include a Monday - flexible on other days/hours.
Salary: Band 3 equivalent.
This is a chance to work in a caring environment where your contribution truly matters. We are looking for someone who finds patient care and working as a team rewarding. The role can be demanding at times so we are looking for someone who is also resilient and has a can‑do attitude. Prior experience of working in general practice or the NHS is required, but not experience of all aspects of the role. Training will be provided to a suitable candidate to become an excellent general practice HCA.
Responsibilities
- Clinics are clean, tidy & stocked
- Blood pressure, height, weight, pulse & temperature
- Phlebotomy
- Chaperoning
- NHS Health checks
- ECG recording
- Urinalysis
- Maintenance and testing of medical equipment
- Ordering, rotation & maintenance of clinical stock levels
- Re‑stock clinical rooms and storage cupboards
- Recording refrigerator temperatures
- Collection of specimens as directed
- Flu vaccinations
- Routine immunisation & B12
- Record patient and clinical appointment information on the clinical system
- Recognise changes in the patient’s observations which must be reported and acted on
- Assist clinicians in emergency management of patients
- Enable patients to access appropriate professional care within the practice team
- Appreciate the Principles of Healthy Living
- Provide relevant health promotion literature for patients
- Undertake and record patient health checks, including blood pressure readings, urine testing, and medical history taking
- Attend any training required for the role
- Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions
- Test urine specimens using appropriate equipment and record results
- Assist with the collection of health and well‑being data
- Help raise awareness of health and well‑being and how it can be promoted
- Assist clinicians in the emergency management of patients (e.g., CPR, anaphylaxis, haemorrhage, fits and faints, hypoglycaemia)
- Attend relevant training and meetings as required
- Perform other clinical tasks as trained and agreed to meet the needs of the practice
- Liaise with patients for a specific health register
- Advise on health promotion
- Vaccine/cold chain storage and monitoring
- Maintain vaccine stock levels and stock rotation
- Work additional hours, including at weekends, to accommodate the needs of patients (e.g., for flu/COVID vaccine clinics)
Special Job Requirements – Essential
- Chaperoning
- Following protocols and clinical guidelines

- Requirement to provide extended access in line with practice or external initiatives
Essential Qualifications
- GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
- Minimum of 1 year of healthcare experience
- NHS Care Certificate or working towards this
Desirable Qualifications
- Qualified to NVQ level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care
Essential Experience
- Good IT skills, able to learn how to use new applications
- Previous experience in general practice/NHS
Desirable Experience
- Previous knowledge of SystmOne
