Job description

This is a varied role, providing professional advice and coordination across all aspects of health, safety, fire and welfare throughout the Council. You will act as the Council’s competent person under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations and work closely with services, managers, trade union representatives and senior leaders to promote a positive and practical health and safety culture.

About the role

As Corporate Health and Safety Advisor, you will:

  • Deliver and maintain an effective Health and Safety Management System that demonstrates compliance with legislation and best practice
  • Provide professional advice and guidance to services on risk assessments, safe systems of work and accident prevention
  • Lead on workplace inspections, audits and monitoring visits, producing clear reports and follow-up actions
  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, including RIDDOR reporting and trend analysis
  • Develop, review and maintain corporate health and safety policies, procedures and guidance
  • Deliver and coordinate health and safety training, working closely with HR and Organisational Development
  • Act as the Council’s liaison with the HSE, insurers and other regulatory bodies when required
  • Support health and safety governance through effective communication, meetings and engagement with trade union safety representatives
  • You will work collaboratively across the organisation, providing clear, proportionate and practical advice that balances safety, service delivery and business needs.
About you
  • At least three years’ occupational experience in a health and safety advisory role
  • A strong working knowledge of current health and safety legislation and best practice, ideally within a local government or similarly complex organisation
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to engage and influence managers and senior officers
  • The ability to analyse complex information and present it clearly and accurately
  • Experience of delivering training and presentations in a clear and engaging way
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • A NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health (or equivalent) and membership of IOSH are desirable.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to appropriate transport is required.
