The Health & Safety Adviser is a vital role as part of the School Senior Professional Services Team with responsibility for advising School management on the effective management of Health & Safety by: writing specific plans and procedures; effectively communicating Health & Safety requirements and responsibilities to staff and students so that they are aware of their duties; monitoring performance; and making prioritised recommendations to improve performance.

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Health and Safety Adviser (Maternity Cover) within our Team, to promote the highest standards of adherence to Health & Safety policies and procedures. This is a fixed-term appointment for 1 year.

Your priorities will include:

  • Effectively implement University Health & Safety policy. Lead on the updating of the School's health and safety policy, statement, organisation and arrangements with the Dean and School Manager and submit to the School Health and Safety Committee for approval.
  • Review and update the School's Health and Safety risk register, develop risk profiles for any top tier risks, and bring any updates to the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Lead on undertaking safety inspections and audits, using the University audit and inspection systems and liaising with local management. Report results to the School Health and Safety Committee.
  • Lead on workplace inspections of all areas within the School and provide recommendations where improvements could be made.
  • Act as Chair and provide updates and reports to the School Health and Safety Committee.
  • Provide reports, updates, and advice in relation to operational and research activities as necessary.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Hold, or be willing to work toward, a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent
  • Membership of IOSH (or similar organisation).
  • Knowledge and understanding of best practice in approaches to Health & Safety and appreciation of Health & Safety legislation.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, producing work of consistently high standard, and the ability to generate well-written documentation, communicating often complex and specialist information.
  • Experience of using Microsoft 365 including Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Outlook and Office and the ability to present information and data in a clear and concise manner.
