Job description
Overview

Job Purpose/role: To lead and manage the affairs of the school enabling the delivery of quality education through the appropriate involvement of the pupils, staff, parents, multi- disciplinary agencies and the communities it serves. This will be done in accordance with the authority’s strategic plan, the school’s/service’s improvement/service plans, the national improvement framework drivers and outcomes, in accordance with current legislation and within national and local agreements.

Location: Harlaw Academy, Aberdeen

Duration: Permanent, Full Time

The Council will require PVG membership for relevant roles. From 1 April 2023, where a role requires PVG membership, candidates will be responsible for the cost if the full time equivalent salary is £30,000 and above. For teaching roles and jobs at Grade 11 and above (currently £31,505 per annum / £17.31 per hour), the PVG cost is initially paid by the Council and then deducted from the first full month’s salary.

Responsibilities

The post holder is expected to:

  • Lead and manage the affairs of the school to enable quality education and effective involvement of pupils, staff, parents, multi- disciplinary agencies and the community.
  • Contribute to the authority’s strategic plan and improvement/service plans; work within national and local frameworks and legislation.
Qualifications

The post holder needs to hold, at a minimum:

  • Full GTC Registration (Scotland)
  • PVG scheme membership – Working with Children
  • Appropriate teaching qualification
Demonstrated capabilities

The post holder should be able to demonstrate:

  • Evidence of career-long professional learning and participation in professional update
  • Experience leading and managing change and securing school improvement
  • Experience in a senior leadership post in an appropriate setting
  • Experience of senior management responsibility in an educational environment
  • Knowledge of school improvement planning, resource allocation, self-evaluation, and quality improvement processes
  • Knowledge of current educational initiatives and priorities
  • Knowledge of Local Government (Scotland) Act 2003 provisions
  • Effective management of human resources, industrial/employee relations and health and safety while improving performance
  • Strategic thinking, organisational and motivational skills
  • High-order interpersonal skills for communication with colleagues, pupils, parents/carers and partners
  • Ability to promote equality of opportunity for staff and service users
  • Setting and securing high expectations and standards through professional advice and performance reviews
