Overview

Head of Performance Engineering - Remote (UK & Ireland) | £100k+

We're building the next generation of capabilities that power our merchant-first ecosystem. With a hybrid multi-cloud / on-premise environment, our engineering teams deliver solutions at scale with observability, availability, and performance at the heart of everything we do.

We're now hiring a Head of Performance Engineering to lead the design, strategy, and delivery of world-class performance testing across our platforms. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with strategic influence, working across Engineering, DevOps, and TechOps to ensure our systems are resilient, scalable, and built for growth.

This is a fully remote role - you can be based anywhere in the UK or Ireland.

Responsibilities

• Owning the organisation-wide performance testing strategy (load, stress, soak) and growing this function from the ground up
• Designing and architecting dedicated performance test environments that mirror production at scale
• Building tools and frameworks to model production traffic and generate realistic load scenarios
• Partnering with Engineering and DevOps to adopt a shift-left approach, identifying risks early in the SDLC
• Providing performance insights, bottleneck analysis, and tuning recommendations to senior stakeholders
• Coaching and mentoring engineers to embed performance best practices into every product team
• Driving observability, monitoring, and SLA adherence, escalating where required

Qualifications

• 10+ years' experience in performance testing complex enterprise systems
• 8+ years leading within quality or performance engineering
• Proven experience designing replica production environments for high-throughput applications
• Strong technical expertise in JMeter, BlazeMeter, K6, Kibana, Cloudflare or similar tools
• Background with infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, Bicep)
• Hands-on experience testing APIs, services, databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MSSQL) at scale
• Strong understanding of DevOps, cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), and modern CI/CD practices
• Excellent leadership, coaching, and stakeholder communication skills
