Head Fitter

Location: Redditch

Hours: Monday – Friday, 07:30–16:30

Employment Type: Full-Time

Salary: Depending on experience

We are currently working with a well‑established construction & plant services business that is looking for a highly skilled Head Fitter to oversee the efficient running of the workshop and yard. This is a key leadership position responsible for coordinating fitters, maintaining high levels of equipment availability, and ensuring safe and smooth operations across multiple sites.

The Role

As the Head Fitter, you will play a crucial role in leading the workshop team, planning workloads, ensuring machinery is serviced effectively, and maintaining high safety and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Plant Manager to plan and coordinate daily workloads for fitters and yard personnel.
  • Provide day‑to‑day support, technical guidance, and leadership to fitters.
  • Maintain stock levels and manage supplier relationships.
  • Oversee repairs and servicing of all plant machinery, including:
    • Road‑going vehicles (vans and trucks)
    • Dumpers
    • Excavators
    • Small plant and tools
  • Organise delivery and collection of plant and equipment.
  • Ensure accurate and up‑to‑date records of all services, repairs, and inspections.
  • Inspect off‑hired machinery and document any customer chargeable damages.
  • Uphold strong health & safety standards, ensuring all workshop practices align with risk assessments and regulations.
  • Carry out lifting inspections and sign‑off procedures.
  • Mentor and develop trainees, apprentices, and workshop staff.
  • Complete monthly asset and fleet reporting.

  • Strong knowledge of plant machinery, diagnostics, and workshop operations.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Confident in workload planning, delegation, and team leadership.
  • Strong communication skills across all levels of the business.
  • Methodical approach to administration, record keeping, and compliance.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain long‑term relationships with external suppliers.
