Job description

Darwen Healthlink is looking to recruit an experienced Healthcare Assistant (HCA) / Phlebotomist to join our nursing team.

Previous experience in working in a GP setting is desirable; however, applications will also be considered from candidates who can demonstrate relevant skills gained through alternative healthcare experience.

The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, be a good team player, and be able to assist colleagues to ensure the highest possible standard of care is provided to our registered patients.

Good IT skills are required, and knowledge of EMIS Web would be desirable. The post holder must also be willing to undertake any training required to further develop their skills and competencies.

This role is offered on 20 hour per week basis as follows

  • Monday 14:00pm-18:00pm
  • Tuesday 13:30pm -17:30pm
  • Thursday 14:00pm -18:00pm
  • Friday 08:00am - 12:00pm
Main duties of the job
  • Providing a phlebotomy service, ensuring the correct labelling and handling of blood samples in accordance with practice procedures.
  • Undertaking Blood Pressure and pulse checks
  • Supporting the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
  • Carry out ECG's
  • Acting as a chaperone
  • Supporting weight management and healthy lifestyle advice.
  • Carry out pre-diabetic checks and undertaking diabetic foot checks in line with practice protocols
  • Managing vaccine cold-chain storage, monitoring, and recording in line with practice policy.
  • Restocking consumables, vaccines, oxygen and emergency drug boxes ensuring appropriate stock rotation and expiry date checks.
  • Supporting the collection and collation of data related to patient health and well being needs.
  • Supporting and undertaking Learning Disability Health Checks
  • Undertaking Patient NHS Health checks
  • Urinalysis
  • Administering Influenza, Pneumococcal, Shingles and Vitamin B12 injections in accordance with practice protocols and Patient Specific Directions (PSD)
  • Ensure that clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy.
  • Supporting the administrative team to achieve QOF targets and Local Enhanced Service Specification.

Darwen Healthlink is a busy, friendly and expanding practice with 4 GP Partners providing a caring service to a population of approximately 15,000 registered patients. To support our future plans and service development, we are seeking a Health Care Assistant / Phlebotomist to join our clinical team.

Our clinical team consists of

  • 4 GP Partners
  • 1 ARRS GP
  • 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner
  • 3 Practice Nurses

They are supported by a Practice Manager, Office Supervisor, Practice Operations Assistant and an efficient and professional adminstrative team, which has recieved training in care navigation and workflow management.

Job responsibilities
  • Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patient need
  • Deliver and assist clinicalstaff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion,long-term condition management and patient education
  • Be an integral part of the general practice team
  • Provide clinical support to registered nurses and otherhealthcare professionals within the organisation
  • Deliver basic clinical care interventions under supervision,supporting continuity of care and patient safety initiatives
  • Ensurespecimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
  • Ensureclinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with theorganisations IPC Policy
  • Workwithin national and local protocols where these exist
  • Beaware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies andprocedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
  • Recognise the boundaries oftheir practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred
  • Supportin the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements
  • Support the administrative team on an as-required basis
  • Undertakeall mandatory training and induction programmes
  • Contributeto and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance
  • Maintaina clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
  • Attenda formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once aperformance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regularbasis so that new objectives can be agreed
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Care Certificate or equivalent qualification (such as Level 2 in Health and Social Care)
  • GCSE Grade A to C (or Grade 7 -4) in English and Maths
  • Qualified in Phlebotomy/ECG/Blood Pressure checks
  • Qualified in administering vaccinations
Experience
  • Experience of working within a heathcare setting
  • Ability to undertake patient health checks, including height, weight, BP, pulse, and BMI
  • Understanding of safeguarding adults and children
  • Chaperone procedure
  • Understanding of infection control procedures
  • Clinical IT system user and the ability to record accurate clinical notes.
  • Ability to work within own scope of practice and understanding when to refer to colleagues
  • Experience of working within a primary care setting
  • Ability to undertake vaccinations
