Join Our New Haemoglobinopathy Team at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. An exciting opportunity has arisen to become part of a newly established and innovative Haemoglobinopathy team at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. Following a successful bid, we have secured recurrent funding from NHS England via the Medical Technologies (MedTech) funding stream to enhance and sustain our current services.
This new service aims at directly addressing the concerns raised in the “No One's Listening” report, tackling health inequalities and improving outcomes for patients living with haemoglobinopathies. We are recruiting into new positions including Haemoglobinopathy Senior Nurses.
We are looking for experienced, motivated, and compassionate senior nurses with a strong background in haemoglobinopathies or haematology, ideally gained in acute settings such as:
- Emergency Departments (ED)
- Intensive Care Units (ITU)
- Renal Units
- Haematology Inpatient Wards or Day Care Units
Successful candidates will work across multiple sites to ensure equitable access to elective and emergency red cell exchange services. Full training and supervision will be provided to support your development within this specialist service.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for administering specialist apheresis and complex treatment pathways/procedures.
- Administration of blood products in line with Trust policy.
- Work as a named nurse for a defined group of patients, providing positive clinical leadership and working collaboratively with senior nursing and clinical teams.
- Act as a professional role model, providing direct and indirect expert apheresis clinical care, evidence‑based practice and supporting the professional development of others.
- Assist in delivering high‑quality, safe and effective apheresis care focused on improving outcomes and patient experience.
- Support specialist apheresis services across multiple sites, fulfilling the role of a skilled operator.
- Administer elective and emergency Day Care apheresis procedures for haemoglobinopathy patients, including top‑up/simple transfusions.
- Provide apheresis emergency procedures in critical care settings across hospital sites.
- Maintain essential skills and knowledge to meet statutory/accreditation requirements (e.g., CQC standards, NHS Litigation Authority, MHRA).
- Effective pain management for patients in sickle cell disease crisis, delivering compassionate, person‑centred care and treating patients, relatives/carers with dignity and respect.
- Support clinical trial portfolio and standards, including audits and surveys related to clinical incidents.
- Promote and maintain effective communication with patients, relatives/carers, and other staff, including the wider haemoglobinopathy team.
- Continuously develop and maintain essential nursing skills that support specialist haemoglobinopathy services and improve service delivery.
- Champion a culture of high quality, safety and continuous improvement across the haemoglobinopathy service.
Person Specification
- NMC registrant.
- Degree or Diploma in Nursing.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Recognised teaching/assessing qualification.
- Recognised post‑registration training relevant to specialty – e.g., Apheresis certification.
- Masters‑level study or willingness to undertake.
- Relevant post‑registration experience within haematology specialty.
- Experience of multidisciplinary working and working under supervision to deliver specialist care.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
- Blood transfusion skills, venepuncture and cannulation.
- Knowledge of the therapeutic application of apheresis procedures.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- IT skills (including proficiency with Microsoft Office packages and accurate, fast typing skills).
- Ability to undertake surveys or audits, as necessary (e.g., audit of clinical incidents).
- Ability to act as a role model and lead by example.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills appropriate to the role.

Salary
£44,485 to £52,521 a year, Per Annum Including High Cost Area Supplement.
