Job description

As an apprentice at Survey Solutions, you have the exciting opportunity to progress your career within the geomatics sector. You will work on exciting and varied land and measured building surveying or utilities, CCTV and drainage projects, learning to conduct surveys on site using innovative technology and how to process data in the office. The ideal candidate will have an interest in outdoor activities and passion for a career as a surveyor. Duties will include:

  • Work on site with experienced surveyors, conducting land & measured building/utility surveys using innovative technology and processing data in the office
  • Undertake on-the-job training and earn whilst you learn
  • Set up surveying instruments, record data and provide logistical support to Surveyors
  • Undertake tasks within the office environment to assist with project completion e.g. processing surveying data, instrument checks, organising and loading equipment, data input
  • Maintain survey instruments to a high working standard and ensuring its fit for purpose
  • Attend and contribute effectively to training and development days to assist your progression through the program
  • Follow Survey Solutions health and safety policies and procedures and promote a high standard of health, safety and welfare in the workplace and to members of the public while onsite, Plan and prepare Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) and report any additional controls required
  • Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Carry out adjustment checks on survey equipment
  • Interpret information from client drawings and specifications
  • Gather and interpret information from a range of sources
  • Communicate with others verbally, for example colleagues and stakeholders
  • Plan surveys selecting survey equipment for a project according to the client's specification
  • Planning routes to existing and new sites
  • Establish a survey control on site for example using total station, GNSS or levels
  • Use setting out engineering equipment and techniques, for example measuring tapes and string, distances and bearings, total station using co-ordinates to peg out co-ordinates, grid lines and offsets
  • Use survey equipment, for example total stations, levels, laser scanners, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) using geodetic parameters
  • Capture and record geospatial survey data, for example topographic, river sections, drainage invert surveys, volumetric calculations, as-built surveys and measured building surveys
  • Select and use surveying processing software for processing data into either 2D or 3D drawings or 3D models
  • Produce geospatial survey reports using computer software
  • Apply quality assurance procedures: site work, drawing, model or report
  • Manage time and tasks to meet project deadlines
  • Comply with relevant industry legislation and regulations when undertaking geospatial work
  • Communicate in writing with others, for example internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers
  • Comply with environmental, social, human and economic sustainability regulations and requirements, for example safe disposal of waste, recycling or re-use of materials, efficient use of resources, contributing to the community, volunteering within the geospatial industry

  • Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, and internal training programme, the apprentice will be promoted to Survey Technician where they will be able to complete their own surveys independently and to a high standard
  • They will also apply for professional membership from the CICES, gaining Associate membership
  • Following this they can learn how to complete large scale, complex projects, learn how to lead teams on projects, they can also specialise into different disciplines and more specialisms such as Drones, or they can progress into the role of Surveyor, and then supervisor or management positions
  • Diploma in Geospatial Surveying Level 3
  • English and maths (if required) Level 2, GCSE in:

  • Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

  • Importance of Health & Safety, This will involve working outdoors in different weather conditions, so a keen interest in outdoor activities or previous experience working outside would be an advantage. The role will involve traveling to different client sites, with early start times due to client requirements which will include some overnight stays to complete the project. Start times can vary, flexible schedule required. Candidate ideally must be over 18 due to regularly working overtime over 40 hours per week, they must have a full driving licence with access to own vehicle and be able to reliably commute to the office each day and also our Coventry office.

  • £15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
