Job description

A well-established, engineering-led business operating within the standby power and critical power sector is seeking a Generator Engineer to join its service and support team. With a strong reputation for delivering high-quality generator solutions across the UK, the business continues to invest in its engineers, internal progression, and long-term staff development.

This is a home-based, field service role, ideal for an engineer with strong mechanical and electrical knowledge who enjoys working independently while delivering excellent customer service.

Responsibilities
  • Travel to customer sites across the UK to carry out servicing, maintenance, and repairs on a wide range of generator brands
  • Perform planned and reactive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, inspections, and performance testing
  • Carry out diagnostics, fault finding, and rectification of mechanical and electrical generator faults
  • Undertake installation and commissioning of generator systems, both portable and fixed
  • Complete load bank testing, performance verification, and post-installation testing
  • Diagnose and repair alternators, batteries, control panels, wiring, ATS, and associated power systems
  • Maintain accurate and detailed service reports, documenting work completed and parts used
  • Communicate clearly with customers, explaining faults, solutions, and operational guidance
  • Participate in an on-call rota and respond to emergency breakdowns where required
  • Ensure all work is completed in line with health & safety regulations, including risk assessments and PPE use
  • Represent the business professionally on-site, acting as a brand ambassador at all times
Requirements
  • Proven experience in generator servicing, maintenance, installation, or commissioning
  • Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding capability
  • Understanding of load balancing, power distribution, and control systems
  • Experience using diagnostic tools such as multimeters and engine diagnostic software
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing workload effectively
  • Strong customer-facing and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel nationwide, including occasional nights away
Qualifications
  • HNC / HND / NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Relevant industry training and certifications
