A well-established, engineering‑led business operating within the standby power and critical power sector is seeking a Generator Engineer to join its service and support team. This is a home‑based, field service role, ideal for an engineer with strong mechanical and electrical knowledge who enjoys working independently while delivering excellent customer service.
Responsibilities
- Travel to customer sites across the UK to carry out servicing, maintenance, and repairs on a wide range of generator brands
- Perform planned and reactive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, inspections, and performance testing
- Carry out diagnostics, fault finding, and rectification of mechanical and electrical generator faults
- Undertake installation and commissioning of generator systems, both portable and fixed
- Complete load bank testing, performance verification, and post‑installation testing
- Diagnose and repair alternators, batteries, control panels, wiring, ATS, and associated power systems
- Maintain accurate and detailed service reports, documenting work completed and parts used
- Communicate clearly with customers, explaining faults, solutions, and operational guidance
- Participate in an on‑call rota and respond to emergency breakdowns where required
- Ensure all work is completed in line with health & safety regulations, including risk assessments and PPE use
- Represent the business professionally on‑site, acting as a brand ambassador at all times
Requirements
- Proven experience in generator servicing, maintenance, installation, or commissioning
- Strong mechanical and electrical fault‑finding capability
- Understanding of load balancing, power distribution, and control systems
- Experience using diagnostic tools such as multimeters and engine diagnostic software
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing workload effectively
- Strong customer‑facing and communication skills
- Willingness to travel nationwide, including occasional nights away
Qualifications
- HNC / HND / NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Relevant industry training and certifications
