Job Summary

UNLOCK YOUR BEST WORK LIFE + MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO EVERY LIFE We have an exciting opportunity for a General Practitioner to join our Primary Care team at HMP Thameside, a category B remand prison located in South East London, close to Plumstead and Woolwich Arsenal stations. The prison houses around 1,232 patients with a variety of needs including substance misuse and mental health. Within this role you will work in a busy healthcare environment, where no two days are the same. Ideal applicants will enjoy a fast‑paced role and have previous experience with substance misuse prescribing. Experienced in training and development for junior prescribing staff will also be welcomed.

Hours Monday 5pm‑10pm, Wednesday 5pm‑10pm, Saturday 12pm‑10pm.

Salary Up to £134,680 FTE per annum depending on experience.

Support includes bespoke induction, Introducing Health in Justice training course, competency framework, regional and national career development opportunities, a bespoke Learning Management System and support from the wider team.

Candidates are required to have a legal right to work in the UK. Due to the nature of the role, offers of employment will be subject to additional vetting and security checks.

Main duties of the job

As a General Practitioner, your responsibilities include:

  • Deliver first‑class healthcare to a diverse group of patients.
  • Provide clinical assessment, diagnosis and timely management decisions.
  • Act as a highly specialist resource to the healthcare team.

Qualifications required
  • MBChB or MBBS.

  • Experience working as a General Practitioner in community general practice.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Ability to work with patients with a history of substance misuse.
  • RCGP Certificate in Substance Misuse 1 and 2, or willingness to undertake these qualifications.
Job responsibilities
  • Respond to medical problems presented by patients, including diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral as appropriate.
  • Prescribe for patients, regularly review medications and monitor repeat prescriptions.
  • Provide medical leadership and expert advice to the wider healthcare team.
  • Deliver effective patient care, developing high levels of communication with patients and utilising evidence‑based best practice.
  • Undertake appropriate clinical audit to improve outcomes.
  • Inspire and develop positive collaborative relationships across the multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote multidisciplinary discussions around complex case management and ensure systems and processes are in place for managing results, letters and tasks.
  • Undertake clinical risk assessments and implement management strategies for risks.
  • Share and disseminate acquired knowledge with all team members through development sessions and clinical governance meetings or case reviews.
